Class Discrimination and Health Issues in Elysium
1. ESSAY
Elysium is one of the many movies that came out in 2013 that was giving the world a
“warning” of society‟s future. Elysium doesn‟t give warning of society‟s future though. The
movie fantasizes about only the rich being able to live on a perfect type world. The rich and
poor are separated by habitat but isn‟t society like that today? The movie describes a
deeper story of not just what will happen in the future but what‟s happening now.
In 2154 a number of people live on a luxurious space habitat called Elysium and the rest of
the majority on an overpopulated and devastated Earth. While those on Earth are policed by
ruthless robots, Elysium's citizens live in absolute comfort and regularly use medical
devices called Med-Bays to cure any disease and injury. Max Da Costa, a car thief and
parolee, lives in the ruins of Los Angeles and works at an assembly line for Armadyne Corp,
a company which supplies Elysium weapons such as the robots which police Earth. After
being accidentally poisoned by radiation, Max has only five days to live. Max knows his
only chance for survival is a Med-Bay and seeks help from a smuggler named Spider and
his friend Julio. Spider agrees to get Max to Elysium if he steals financial information from
Carlyle, Armadyne CEO. Once Max and spider reach Elysium they try and take over.
Spider and Max reach Elysium's computer core where Spider realizes that the program's
activation will kill Max. Max personally activates the program. As Max dies, Elysium's
computer core reboots and registers every Earth resident as an Elysium citizen. Elysium's
computer dispatches a fleet of medical ships to Earth to begin giving medical treatment to
all the Elysium people.
The issue of the movie was that the poor and the rich and the healthy and the unhealthy
were getting to the point where the two aren‟t on the same planet. The two main issues are
class discrimination and health issues with some hint of future violence for no reason. Class
struggles show up everywhere in life, Elysium points them out. Where do class
discrimination show up? The answer; everywhere. In school Jocks VS Nerds, Poor Vs.
Wealthy, and Black VS White, it all adds up to being that one group or thing will be greater
in the end than the other. The problem is that one gets too much credit and the other one
gets the hate when it was built or they were born into that social class. People hate or even
kill the other class for more power (where the violence comes in). Health issues are the
same if one girl is born with no defaults‟ and the other girl is born with a deformity then the
girl with the deformity gets the hate or the weird looks when she has done nothing. Society
is cruel in a way that if you‟re not on the better class or ranking then your looked at
2. differently which Elysium shows by the wealthy not allowing and looking down upon the
people on earth.
You don‟t see people wearing bright fancy new clothes on earth. You don‟t see any fancy
houses or bright new fresh things on earth in the movie Elysium, this represents the poor.
Elysium you have the nice houses the nice lawns everything new, this is the rich. Now look
at society today you don‟t see Big Mansions in a trailer park. You don‟t see small torn
houses next to fancy house. The movie captures society today just in a futuristic scientific
form. This movie, being supposedly related to the future, could be a warning saying that, „if
we don‟t make a stop to the discrimination of social classes it could go on for well over 100
years from now‟. Often talk about Race and social classes ar voided because they tend to
make people uncomfortable. News broadcast, especially about weather, tend to tell America
that many people in America are unable to escape from these natural disasters form the
well-being that they are too poor to leave anywhere else, it‟s all the same.
“No, no, no. This is really not Science Fiction, this is today. This is now” states Director of
Elysium, Neill Blomkamp, “its important that my movie grapple things that matter, in this
case disparity, immigration, health care, and corporate greed. “ Neill Blomkamp is also the
director of „District 9‟. Niell says allegory, satire, and dark humor interest him: providing
answers to society‟s flaws. Niell doesn‟t seem to be coming off as he is afraid of what the
future will become he states, “one who thinks they can change the world by, asking movies,
is sorely wrong.” I believe he directs movies to tell a story of society‟s dystopian world trying
not to change anything socially himself. His idea of the future doesn‟t change much from
what life is right now. You can‟t look at a movie and automatically assume, ‟oh that‟s what
he thinks the future will look like‟. Yet it‟s just a movie no real prediction. Blomkamp believes
earth will someday look a lot like this dystopian world in Elysium. He places humanity‟s odds
at a 50-50, “The dice are going to be rolled and either we‟re going to end up coming out of
this through technical innovation or were going to go down the road of Malthusian
catastrophe.”
