Start By:
a. Remove the right hand final drive, the planetary group, and the brake.
Note: Orientation of brake and planetary assemblies. Mark the top of the planetary gears, the sun
gear, and the ring gear (if equipped) for assembly purposes.

1. Position final drive (3), the planetary group, and brake hub (2) as shown in Illustration 3.
2. Remove two bolts (1) that hold the planetary group and brake hub (2) to final drive (3).
3. Install Tooling (B) in the hub of final drive (3).
4. Tighten Tooling (B) evenly to remove the planetary group and brake hub (1) from final
drive (3).
5. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the planetary group and brake hub (2).
The weight of the planetary group and brake hub (2) is approximately 136 kg (300 lb).

Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring
pressure.
Spring force will be released when covers are removed.
Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.
6. Remove bolts (4).
7. Remove brake hub (2) from housing (6).
8. Remove the retaining ring and ring gear (5) from brake hub (2).
9. Remove four friction discs (7) and three brake plates from housing (6).

10. Remove bolts (8) and plate (9).
Note: Do not allow carrier (11) to fall when carrier (11) is pressed from housing (6).
11. Use a suitable press and Tooling (C) to remove carrier (11) from housing (6).
12. Remove bearing cone (10) from housing (6).
13. Remove ring (14) from carrier (11).
15. Remove slinger (12) from carrier (11).
Note: Damage to bearing cone (15) will result if removed from carrier (11).
16. If necessary, remove bearing cone (15) from carrier (11).

17. Use a hammer and a punch to push pin (17) in shaft (16).
18. Remove planetary shaft (16), planetary gear (19), thrust discs (20), and bearings (21) from
carrier (11).
19. Remove pin (17) from planetary shaft (16).
20. Repeat Steps 17 through 19 for remaining planetary gears (19).
21. Remove sun gear (18) from carrier (11).

Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring
pressure.
Spring force will be released when covers are removed.
Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.
23. Remove retainer (23) from piston (24).
24. If necessary, remove bearing cups (25) from retainer (23).
25. Remove seal ring (26) from retainer (23).

26. Remove piston (24) and O-ring seal (27) from the housing.
27. Remove seal ring (28) from piston (24).
28. Inspect the O-ring seals.
29. If necessary, replace the O-ring seals.
30. Remove spring (30) and ring (31) from housing (6).

31. Remove shuttle valve (32) from the housing.

D - Loctite Hi-Temp Flange Sealant 1
1. Install shuttle valve (32) in the housing.

Note: Orient spring (30) with the outer edge downward.
2. Install ring (31) and spring (30) in housing (6).
3. Apply clean oil to seal ring (28).
Note: Orient the seal ring (28) with the lip downward as shown in Illustration 3.
4. Install seal ring (28) in piston (24).

5. Install piston (24) and O-ring seal (27) in the housing.
6. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (25). Install bearing cups (25) in retainer (23).
Note: Orient seal ring (26) with the lip downward as shown in Illustration 5.
7. Install seal ring (26) in retainer (23). Apply clean oil to seal ring (26).
8. Install retainer (23) on piston (24). Align the oil passage in retainer (23) with the oil passage
and the O-ring seal in the housing. Install bolts (22).

9. Install sun gear (18) in carrier (11).
10. Install bearings (21) in planetary gear (19).
11. Install thrust discs (20) and planetary gear (19) in carrier (11). Install planetary shaft (16).
Note: If the rubber in pin (17) is damaged, replace pin (17).
12. Align the hole in planetary shaft (16) with the hole in carrier (11) and install pin (17). Install
pin (17) until the pin is even with the surface of carrier (11).
13. Repeat Steps 10 through 12 for the remaining planetary gears.
Note: If bearing cone (15) was removed from planetary carrier (11), then a new bearing
cone (15) must be installed.
14. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (15) to a maximum of 135 °C (275 °F). Install
bearing cone (15) on carrier (11).
15. Apply Tooling (D) to the flange of slinger (12).
16. Install slinger (12) on carrier (11). Install bolts (13).

17. Install ring (14) in carrier (11).
18. Position housing (6) on carrier (11).
19. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (10) to a maximum of 135 °C (275 °F). Install
bearing cone (10) on carrier (11).
20. Position plate (9) on the carrier.
21. Install bolts (8).

22. Install four friction discs (7) and the three brake plates into housing (6). Alternate friction
discs (7) and the brake plates.

23. Install ring gear (5) and the retaining ring in brake hub (2).
24. Position brake hub (5) on housing (6).
25. Install bolts (3).

26. Use a suitable lifting device and Tooling (A) to position the planetary group and brake hub
(2) on final drive (3). The weight of the planetary group and brake hub (2) is approximately
135 kg (300 lb).
27. Install two bolts (1) that hold the planetary group and brake hub (2) on final drive (3).
End By:
a. Install the right hand final drive, the planetary group, and the brake hub.

Start By:
a. Separate the track.
b. Remove the steering motor.
c. Remove the drive axles.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat®
products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Power Train Oil - Change" for the correct
draining and filling procedures.
2. Remove six bolts (1) from adapter (2) for the steering motor.
3. Install three 3/8 inch by 16 forcing bolts in holes (9) in order to remove the adapter from the
main case.
