1. Remove two bolts (2) that are opposite each other from flywheel (1) .
2. Install two guide bolts (3) .
3. Remove the remaining six bolts (2) from flywheel (1) .
4. Use Tool (A) and a suitable lifting device to remove flywheel (1) from the engine.
Removal Procedure for the Flywheel Ring Gear

1. Check the teeth of the flywheel ring gear (1) for wear or damage. If the teeth of the flywheel
ring gear (1) are worn or damaged, replace the flywheel ring gear.
Note: For proper installation, record the direction of the chamfer (View A) of the teeth of
the flywheel ring gear .
2. Use a hammer and a punch in order to remove the flywheel ring gear (1) from flywheel (2) .
Note: Ensure that the flywheel is not damaged during this procedure.

Flywheel - Install

Installation Procedure for the Flywheel Ring Gear
Always wear protective gloves when handling parts that have been
heated.

1. Heat flywheel ring gear (1) to a temperature of 250 °C (480 °F).
Note: Do not use a torch to heat the flywheel ring gear.
2. Install flywheel ring gear (1) on flywheel (2) .
Note: Ensure that the chamfer of the flywheel ring gear is in the correct position on the
flywheel.
Installation Procedure of the Flywheel

NOTICE

1. Use Tool (A) and a suitable lifting device to put flywheel (1) in position over guide bolts (3)
on the end of the crankshaft.
2. Install bolts (2) in flywheel (1) .
3. Remove guide bolts (3) from flywheel (1) .
4. Install the remaining bolts (2) in flywheel (1) .
5. Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 100 N·m (74 lb ft).
6. Remove Tool (A) and the lifting device from flywheel (1) .
End By: Install the electric starting motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting
Motor - Remove and Install".

Start By:
A. Remove the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Remove".
NOTICE
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers

before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
NOTICE
Do not damage the flange on the crankshaft when the crankshaft oil
seal is removed or installed. Damage to the crankshaft can result if the
proper tool is not used.
1. Use Tool (A) to carefully drill three evenly spaced holes in crankshaft rear seal (1) .
2. Insert Tool (B) into one of the three holes in order to remove crankshaft rear seal (1) .
3. Remove crankshaft rear seal (1) by carefully alternating the position of Tool (B) from hole
to hole. This will allow the crankshaft rear seal to be removed evenly without damage to the
rear flange surface of the crankshaft.

NOTICE
1. Clean the recess in the cylinder block that is for the crankshaft rear seal. Lubricate the
rubber lip of the crankshaft rear seal with clean engine oil.

2. Put crankshaft rear seal (1) in position on the engine.
3. Use Tool (A) and a hammer to install crankshaft rear seal (1). Crankshaft rear seal (1) will
protrude from the cylinder block 1.5 mm (0.06 inch) (X) when crankshaft rear seal (1) is
properly installed.
End By: Install the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Install".

Flywheel Housing - Remove and Install

Start By:
A. Remove the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Remove".
NOTICE
1. Support the engine on a flat level surface forward of the flywheel housing.

2. Attach Tool (A) and a suitable lifting device to flywheel housing (2) .
3. Remove bolts (1) from the flywheel housing.
4. Remove flywheel housing (2) from the engine. It may be necessary to hit flywheel housing
(2) with a soft faced hammer in order to slide the flywheel housing off the dowels.

NOTICE
1. Make sure that the rear face of the cylinder block and the faces of the flywheel housing are
clean and free from damage.

2. Attach Tool (A) and a suitable lifting device to flywheel housing (2) .
3. Put flywheel housing (2) in position on the cylinder block. The dowels in the cylinder block
must be aligned with the dowel holes in the flywheel housing.
4. Install bolts (1) and tighten the bolts evenly to a torque of 78 N·m (58 lb ft).
5. Remove the lifting device and Tool (A) from the engine.
End By: Install the flywheel. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel - Install".

Crankshaft Pulley - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure
NOTICE
1. Loosen the bolts for the alternator and slide the alternator toward the engine in order to
remove the V-belt from the engine.

2. Remove bolt (1) and washer (2) from the crankshaft.
3. Remove crankshaft pulley (3) from the engine.
NOTICE
1. Thoroughly clean the following components: keyway, key, bore of the crankshaft pulley,
end of the crankshaft and washer.
2. Put crankshaft pulley (3) in position on the engine.
3. Inject a 3 mm (0.12 inch) bead of 8T-9022 Silicone Gasket into the crevice between the
crankshaft and the crankshaft pulley. Please refer to illustration 3.

4. Lubricate bolt (1) with clean engine oil.
5. Install washer (2) and bolt (1) in the crankshaft. Tighten bolt (1) to a torque of 185 N·m
(136 lb ft).
6. Put the V-belt in position on the engine.
7. Slide the alternator away from the engine in order to tension the alternator V-belt. Tighten
the bolts for the alternator. For more information on the tension for the alternator V-belt,
refer to the Testing and Adjusting Module, "Belt Tension Chart".

Ensure that the main lip is used in order to remove the crankshaft
front seal. Do not damage the edge of the housing for the crankshaft
front seal.
3. Remove crankshaft front seal (1) carefully by alternating the position of Tool (B) from hole
to hole. This will allow the crankshaft front seal to be removed evenly without damage to
the flange surface of the crankshaft.
