2. A jury in Nevada awarded comedian
George Wallace $1.3 million in a lawsuit
filed against the Bellagio Casino-Resort
in Las Vegas, the Times Colonist
reports. The suit came about after a
2007 incident in which Wallace injured
his leg after becoming entangled in on-
stage wiring while performing at the
casino.
3. The plaintiff had originally sought $7.1
million dollars in damages, but indicated
that he was happy with the jury’s
decision. Wallace was awarded $8,500
for medical damages, $100,000 in pain
and suffering, and $1.2 million in lost
revenue. Wallace’s attorney, Dominic
Gentile, stated that while he and his
client were disappointed with amount of
damages they were happy that the jury
had identified the incident as being “all
the Bellagio’s fault.”
4. Paul Haire, attorney for the Bellagio and
its owner, MGM Resorts International,
denied that resort staff were at fault for
the incident and that a decision to
appeal would be up to resort
management. Mary
Hynes, spokesperson for MGM, stated
that the company would be reviewing
the verdict and legal options.
HSBC Card Services, the group for
whom Wallace was performing on the
night of the incident, was also named as
a defendant in the suit. The two parties
settled out of court with neither
disclosing the terms of the agreement.
5. The 61-year old Wallace is known to
comedy fans for his famous bits such as
People Say Stupid Things, and for being
a close friend of fellow comedian Jerry
Seinfeld, even performing a guest role
on the Seinfeld television show in 1996.
For over ten years, Wallace has held a
residency at the Flamingo Las Vegas
Casino-Hotel where he performs two
nights per week.
