•Products are made up of many different component parts,
each having identifiable sequences of operations.
We call these the Value Streams.
•To improve product value we must improve the processes used
to produce those products.
That improvement is achieved by designing and developing Lean
Value Streams with Six Sigma Quality.

Value Stream Mapping Definitions (cont.)
Information Flow – the sequence of activities involved in translating customer orders into
production & delivery schedules.
Value Stream Map – a one page drawing of the information and material flow activities for a
single process family.
Current State Map – a map that describes the current “as-is” value stream.
Future State Map – a map that describes the future “to-be” value stream.
Icons – the symbols used as shorthand to draw the maps.
