Providing a course that is relevant, practical and patient-centered that will positively impact the speed in which entry-level oncology specialists integrate into the oncology practice setting.
2. Survivorship
• The National Cancer Institute (NCI) describes
cancer survivorship as a focus on the health and
life of a person with cancer post treatment until
the end of life. It covers the physical,
psychosocial, and economic issues of cancer.
Family members, friends, and caregivers are
also a part of the survivorship experience.

3. Survivorship continued
• A cancer patient becomes a survivor at the time of their
diagnosis and will remain a survivor for the rest of their
lives. An estimated 15.5 million cancer survivors are
currently living in the United States. The projected
number of cancer survivors will be 20.3 million, by 2026.
Hence, the importance of survivorship and why we must
continue making certain that cancer patients are offered
the services to assist them as they battle cancer before
during and after treatment.

Treatment goals
We recommend curative treatment. This means that treatment is being given with the goal of
curing your disease so that your cancer goes away and never comes back. All treatments cause
side effects and sometimes those can be significant. As we discussed, the evidence shows that
the benefit of a potential cure is worth the risks of therapy in your situation. There are people
who have your type of cancer who are cured and go on to live normal lives. This is what we
hope will happen in your case. The farther out from treatment that you are, the less likely that
the cancer will come back.
