A. Remove the front axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive and Steering Axle
(Front) - Remove".

1. Place front axle assembly (2) onto suitable cribbing. Loosen nut (1) from each side.
2. Use Tooling (A) in order to disconnect tie rod (3) . Remove nut (1) and remove tie rod (3) .
Repeat for the other side.

3. Remove bolts (4) and remove steering cylinder (5) .
Installation Procedure

1. Install steering cylinder (5) . Apply Tooling (B) to bolts (4) and install bolts (4) . Tighten
bolts (4) to a torque of 460 N·m (340 lb ft).

2. Install tie rod (3) . Repeat for the other side.

3. Install nut (1) to each side of front axle assembly (2) . Tighten nut (1) to a torque of 220
N·m (162 lb ft).
End By: Install the front axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive and Steering Axle
(Front) - Install".

A 155-0695 Thread Lock Compound -
Start By:
A. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic
System Pressure - Release".
B. Remove the tie rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie Rod (Steering) (Front) -
Remove".
Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for
installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this
helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

1. Disconnect hose assemblies (1) and (2) . Remove bolts (4) and steering cylinder (3) .
1. Install steering cylinder (3) and bolts (4) . Apply Tooling (A) to bolts (4) and install bolts
(4) . Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 460 N·m (340 lb ft). Connect hose assemblies (1) and
(2) .
End By: Install the tie rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie Rod (Steering) (Front) -
Install".

Final Drive Planetary - Remove

Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel and Tire - Remove
and Install".
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Drain the oil from the final drive planetary into a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive Planetary (Axle) Oil - Change".

2. Remove screws (2) and remove planetary carrier assembly (3) from wheel flange (1).

Start By:
a. Remove the final drive planetary. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive
Planetary - Remove".

1. Use Tooling (A) and remove retaining ring (1). Remove thrust washer (2), lock rings (3),
thrust washers (4), bearing (5) and planetary gear (6).
2. Repeat Step 1 for the remaining planetary gear assemblies.

1. Position planetary gear (5) on a flat surface. Install one thrust washer (4) and one locking
ring (3). Install bearing (6) into planetary gear (5). Install the remaining thrust washer (4)
and the remaining locking ring (3). Install planetary gear (5) and the components into the
planetary carrier assembly. Install thrust washer (2). Use Tooling (A) and install retaining
ring (1) .
2. Repeat Step 1 for the remaining planetary gear assemblies.
End By: Install the final drive planetary. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive
Planetary - Install".

Final Drive Planetary - Install

1. Position planetary carrier assembly (3) onto wheel flange (1). Install screws (2). Tighten
screws (2) to a torque of 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
2. Fill the final drive planetary with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual,
"Capacities (Refill)" and refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive
Planetary (Axle) Oil - Change".
End By:
a. Install the wheel and the tire. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel and Tire -
Remove and Install".

A 1U-7505 Hydraulic Jack 1

1. Install Tooling (A) under guard (2) . Remove bolts (1) . Repeat for the other side. Use
Tooling (A) in order to lower guard (2) to the ground. The weight of guard (2) is
approximately 38 kg (85 lb).
2. Remove bolts (3) .
3. Remove bolts (5) and remove front drive shaft (4) .
