Start By:
A. Remove the tire and rim (rear). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim -
Remove (Rear)" in this manual.
NOTICE
Failure to properly assemble parts or failure to follow established
procedures can lead to damage of the parts and assembly.
To avoid damage to parts, always identify and mark the parts so that
they can be installed in the same location. Ensure that gear surfaces
align. Never force parts during assembly.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure.
Hot oils can cause burns.
To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the
implement hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel
circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic
lines or components are disconnected or removed.
Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap
is cool enough to touch.

1. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic
System Pressure - Release" in this manual.

2. Disconnect brake hose (1). Put a plug in the end of the hose. Put a cap on the connector.
Plugs and caps prevent oil loss. Plugs and caps prevent contaminating the hydraulic system.
3. Rotate the final drive by hand until drain plug (4) is positioned at the bottom, as shown.
4. Remove drain plug (4). Drain the oil from the final drive into a suitable container for
storage or disposal. The capacity of each final drive is 2 L (2.1 qt).
5. Remove spacer rings (3) .
6. Remove two socket head bolts (2) that hold the planetary carrier to the hub.

7. Attach a suitable lifting device to planetary carrier (5), as shown.
8. Use two pry bars to separate planetary carrier (5) from the hub. Remove planetary carrier
(5) from the wheel studs in the hub. The weight of the planetary carrier is approximately 25
kg (55 lb).
9. Remove thrust washer (6) .

10. Use the appropriate retaining ring pliers to remove retaining ring (8) that holds each
planetary gear (7) in position.
11. Use Tooling (A) to remove each planetary gear (7) from the planetary carrier.
12. Disassemble four planetary gears (7). Remove retaining ring (10) from each side of roller
bearing (9). Remove roller bearing (9) .

13. Remove sun gear (11) and carrier gear (12) as a unit.
14. Use the appropriate retaining ring pliers to remove retaining ring (13) from carrier gear
(12) .
15. Use a press to remove the sun gear from the carrier gear (12). Remove the O-ring seal from
the inside of carrier gear (12) .

16. Remove thrust washer (14). Remove axle shaft (15) .
17. Use the appropriate retaining ring pliers to remove retaining ring (16). Remove thrust
washer (17) .
Note: Mark the position of the voids in the teeth during the removal of the discs. The outer
discs must be installed with the voids in the teeth in the original location.
18. Remove six outer discs (18) and five inner discs (19) .

19. Remove lockring (20) from spanner nut (21) .
20. Use the following procedure in order to remove spanner nut (21) :
a. Install the 1U-5833 Spanner Wrench and the 123-6704 Centering Ring (part of
Tooling (B) ) on spanner nut (21), as shown.

b. Install 123-6703 Centering Guide (part of Tooling (B) ) on the end of the spanner
wrench, as shown. Install retaining ring (16). Install the 4C-6723 Socket (part of
Tooling (C) ) on the end of spanner wrench.
c. Install the remainder of Tooling (C) on the end of Tooling (B). Use Tooling (B) and
Tooling (C) to loosen spanner nut (21) .
d. Remove spanner nut (21), spacer (23) and O-ring seal (22) .

21. Use two pry bars to remove ring gear (24) .
22. Use a hammer and a punch to remove brake piston (25) from ring gear (24). Alternate
between the six holes in the ring gear during the removal of the brake piston. Alternating
between the six holes prevents the binding of the brake piston to the ring gear.
23. Use the following procedure to disassemble brake piston (25) :

a. Remove two rings (28). Remove two seal rings (26) .
b. Remove six socket head bolts (27), six nuts and six springs.
c. Remove plate washer (29) .
24. Remove O-ring seal (30) from the hub.
25. Remove O-ring seal (31) from the spindle.
Note: When hub (32) is removed from the spindle, outer bearing cone (33) will come off
with the hub.
26. Attach Tooling (D) to hub (32), as shown. Fasten an appropriate lifting device to Tooling
(D). Remove the hub from the spindle.

27. Remove outer bearing cone (33) from the hub.
28. Remove outer bearing cup (34) from hub (32) .

29. Remove lip type seal (35) from hub (32). Remove inner bearing cup (36) from the hub.
30. Attach Tooling (F) to inner bearing cone (37). Attach Tooling (E) to Tooling (F). Remove
the inner bearing cone from the spindle.
31. Remove plate (38) and spacer (39) from the spindle.

32. Remove shaft seal (40) from the spindle.
33. Remove 18 socket head bolts (42). Separate spindle (41) from the axle housing.
34. Remove O-ring seal (44) .
35. Remove breather valve (45) .
36. Remove connector (43). Remove the two O-ring seals from connector (43) .

1. Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic
System Pressure - Release" in this manual.
2. Rotate the final drive by hand. Position drain plug (4), as shown.
3. Disconnect brake hose (5). Put a plug in the end of the hose. Plugs prevent oil loss. Plugs
prevent the contamination of the system.
4. Remove drain plug (4). Drain the oil into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The
capacity of each final drive is 2 L (2.1 qt).
5. If necessary, remove the lug nuts, the lockwashers and rings (3) from each wheel stud.
6. Fasten a lifting strap to planetary carrier (2). Fasten an appropriate lifting device to the
lifting strap.
7. Remove two socket head bolts (1) from planetary carrier (2) .
8. Use a pry bar in each slot (M). Use the pry bar to separate planetary carrier (2) from the
hub. Remove the planetary carrier from the front axle. The weight of the planetary carrier is
approximately 25 kg (55 lb).

9. Use the following procedure to disassemble planetary carrier (2) :
a. Use the appropriate retaining ring pliers to remove retaining ring (6) that holds each
planetary gear in position.
b. Use Tooling (A) to remove each planetary gear (7) from the planetary carrier.
c. Remove thrust washer (8) .

d. Remove retaining ring (10) and the washer from both sides of each planetary gear (7).
Remove roller bearing (9) from each planetary gear (7) .
10. Use the appropriate retaining ring pliers to remove retaining ring (11) .
11. Remove carrier gear (13). Remove thrust washer (12) .

12. Use the appropriate retaining ring pliers to remove retaining ring (14) .
Note: Mark the position of the voids in the teeth during the removal. The outer discs must
be installed with the voids in the teeth in the original location.
13. Remove thrust washer (17). Remove six outer discs (16). Remove five inner discs (15) .

14. Remove lockring (18) .
15. Use the following procedure to remove spanner nut (19) :
a. Install the 1U-5833 Spanner Wrench and the 123-6704 Centering Ring (part of
Tooling (B) ) on spanner nut (19), as shown.
b. Install the 123-6703 Centering Guide (part of Tooling (B) ) on the end of the spanner
wrench, as shown. Install retaining ring (14) in order to secure the spanner wrench,
the centering ring and the centering guide in position on spanner nut (19). Install the
4C-6723 Socket (part of Tooling (C) ) on the end of the spanner wrench, as shown.

c. Install the remainder of Tooling (C) on the end of Tooling (B), as shown. Use Tooling
(C) and Tooling (B) to loosen spanner nut (19) .
d. Remove Tooling (B) and Tooling (C). Remove spanner nut (19), spacer (20) and O-
ring seal (21) from the front axle.

b. Remove six socket head bolts (25), six nuts and six springs.
c. Remove plate washer (26) .

19. Remove O-ring seal (28) from the hub (29) .
20. Remove O-ring seal (30) from spindle (31) .
Note: When hub (29) is removed from the spindle, outer bearing cone (32) and bushing (33)
will be loose.
21. Fasten Tooling (D) to hub (29), as shown. Fasten an appropriate lifting device to Tooling
(D). Remove the hub from the spindle.

22. Remove outer bearing cone (32) and bushing (33) from the hub.
23. Remove inner bearing cup (34) from hub (29) .
24. Remove seal (36) from hub (29). Remove outer bearing cup (25) from the hub.
