1. Remove the wheel and tire.
2. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive Planetary (Axle) Oil - Change"
for the correct procedure to drain and fill the final drive planetary.
3. Remove screws (2) and remove planetary carrier assembly (3) from wheel flange (1) .
Installation Procedure
1. Install the final drive planetary in the reverse order of removal.
a. Tighten screws (2) to a torque of 12.50 to 26.25 N·m (110 to 230 lb in).
Disassembly Procedure

1. Remove retaining ring (1) . Remove thrust washer (2) , lock rings (3) , thrust washers (4) ,
bearing (5) and planetary gear (6) .
2. Repeat Step 1 for the remaining planetary gear assemblies.
Assembly Procedure
1. Assemble the final drive planetary in the reverse order of disassembly.

(1) Rear drive shaft
(2) Front drive shaft
Note: All threaded holes and all bolted joint surfaces of the axle and the transmission yokes must be
clean, dry, free of oil, grease, and contaminants.
Front
216-4476 Drive Shaft (All Wheel Drive Manual) and 233-6738 Drive Shaft (All
Wheel Drive Autoshift)

(3) Torque for eight bolts ... 28 ± 7 N·m (21 ± 5 lb ft)
Note: Do not reuse bolts. Discard bolts after initial torque is applied.
Rear

1. Install Tooling (A) under guard (2) . Remove bolts (1) . Repeat for the other side. Use Tooling
(A) in order to lower guard (2) to the ground. The weight of guard (2) is approximately 38 kg
(85 lb).

2. Remove bolts (3) . Discard bolts (3) .
3. Remove bolts (5) . Discard bolts (5) . Remove front drive shaft (4) .
1. Install front drive shaft (4) in the reverse order of removal.
a. New bolts (5) must be used. Torque bolts (5) to a torque of 28 ± 7 N·m (21 ± 5 lb ft).
b. New bolts (3) must be used. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 28 ± 7 N·m (21 ± 5 lb ft).

2. Remove bolts (3) . Discard bolts (3) . Remove rear drive shaft (2) .
1. Install rear drive shaft (2) in the reverse order of removal.
a. New bolts (3) must be used. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 28 ± 7 N·m (21 ± 5 lb ft).
b. New bolts (1) must be used. Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 28 ± 7 N·m (21 ± 5 lb ft).

Torque Converter
Specifications

(1) Apply 4C-5599 Anti-Seize Compound to the pilot of the torque converter that fits in the engine
flywheel.
Note: Degrease the threads in the torque converter housing prior to assembly.
(2) Torque for six bolts ... 55 ± 5 N·m (41 ± 4 lb ft)
Transmission (Autoshift)

Rear view
(1) Torque for 11 plug assemblies ... 54 ± 3 N·m (40 ± 2 lb ft)
(2) Torque for the bolt ... 46 ± 2 N·m (34 ± 1 lb ft)
Note: Before assembly, lubricate the seals for the solenoid valve group with the lubricant that is
being sealed.
(3) Solenoid valve group
Torque for the cartridge nut ... 45 to 55 N·m (33 to 41 lb ft)
Torque for the coil nut ... 3.8 to 6.8 N·m (35 to 60 lb in)
(4) Thickness of five new friction discs and five new clutch discs for the reverse clutch is 19.40 ±
0.65 mm (0.764 ± 0.026 inch).
Thickness of one new 6Y-7929 Friction Disc ... 2.05 ± 0.08 mm (0.081 ± 0.003 inch)
Minimum thickness of one worn 6Y-7929 Friction Disc ... 1.62 mm (0.064 inch)
Thickness of one new 274-4553 Clutch Disc ... 1.78 to 1.88 mm (0.070 to 0.074 inch)

(5) As required, use the following shims in order to obtain a maximum end play of 0.03 to 0.08 mm
(0.001 to 0.003 inch):
Note: Assemble the spacer against the case and the thin shims in the center of the pack.

(7) Remove the plugs in order to check the end play. Apply Loctite 648 to the outer circumference of
the plugs.
(8) Torque for the plug assembly ... 54 N·m (40 lb ft)
(10) Torque for the plug assembly ... 54 ± 3 N·m (40 ± 2 lb ft)
(11) Torque for 16 bolts ... 54 ± 3 N·m (40 ± 2 lb ft)

Section A-A
(12) Thickness of six new friction discs and six new clutch discs for the forward high clutch is 23.28
± 0.78 mm (0.917 ± 0.031 inch).
(13) Thickness of five new friction discs and five new clutch discs for the forward low clutch is 19.40
± 0.65 mm (0.764 ± 0.026 inch).

31.04 ± 1.04 mm (1.222 ± 0.041 inch).
(25) Thickness of five new friction discs and five new clutch discs for the third speed clutch is 19.40
± 0.65 mm (0.764 ± 0.026 inch).
