Start By:
A. Remove tie rods. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie rod (Steering) (Front) - Remove and
Install".
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Remove bolts (1) .
2. Remove the carrier gear (2) with Tooling (A) .

3. Remove the hub (3) from the steer axle hub (4) with Tooling (B) .
4. Remove the rubber O-ring seal (5) from the hub.

5. Pry shaft seal (6) from the hub. If necessary, drive the outer bearing cones out of the hub
bores.
6. Remove the inner bearing cone with Tooling (C) and (D) .
7. Remove the bolts (7) and the axle kingpins (8) from the top and the bottom of the steer axle
hub (4) .

8. Press bearing cone (9) and shaft seal (10) from the axle kingpins (8) with Tooling (E) .
9. Remove shim (11) .

10. Attach link brackets (12) and a suitable lifting device. Remove the steer axle hub (4) and the
axle shaft from the axle housing (13). The weight of the steer axle hub and axle shaft is
approximately 40 kg (88 lb).
11. Expand the retaining ring (14). Separate the sun gear (15) from the steer axle hub.

12. Remove snap ring (16) and separate the axle shaft (17) from the steer axle hub (4) .
13. Press the bushing assembly and the shield body (18) from the axle shaft with Tooling (E) .
14. Pull the shaft seal (19) out of the steer axle hub with Tooling (F) and (G) .

15. Remove the retaining ring (20) from the steer axle hub (4) with Tooling (H) .
16. Remove the bearing from steer axle hub (4) with Tooling (I) .

17. Pull the upper bearing cone (21) and the lower bearing cone out of the axle housing with
Tooling (F) and (G) .
18. Pull the shaft seal (22) from the axle housing with Tooling (F) and (G) .
19. Pull the bearing cone (23) from the axle housing with Tooling (F) and (J) .

1. Drive the sleeve into the axle housing with tooling (A) .
2. Drive the shaft seal against the shoulder with tooling (B). The seal lip should face the oil
chamber.

3. Insert the two bearing races in the steer axle hub until contact is contained with tooling (A) .
4. Press the bearing into the bore of the steer axle hub until contact is obtained with tooling
(A) .
5. Install retaining ring (1) with tooling (C) .

6. Install the shaft seal (2) with tooling (D). the seal lip should face the bearing.
7. Assemble shield (3) and heated sleeve (4) on axle shaft (5). Position the shield against the
shoulder.

8. Install the assembled axle shaft (5) into the steer axle hub (6) .
9. Install the retaining ring (7) in order to secure the axle shaft with tool (C) .
10. Install the sun gear (8) on the axle shaft. Secure the gear with the retaining ring (9) .

11. Install the steer axle hub (6) and the axle shaft into the axle housing until the splines are
seated in the side gear.
12. Install the shim (10) and the axle kingpin in the top of the steer axle hub (6). Install the axle
kingpin without a shim in the bottom of the steer axle hub (6) .
13. Install bolts (11) and tighten to a torque of 117 N·m (86 lb ft).
14. Move the steer axle hub back and forth. Use a torque wrench in order to check the rolling
resistance. The rolling resistance should be 18 to 20 N·m (13 to 15 lb ft). If the rolling
resistance is greater than specification, remove the shim (10). Replace the shim with a
thicker shim. If the rolling resistance is less than specification, remove shim (10). Replace
the shim with a thinner shim.

15. Press both of the outer races firmly against the shoulder with tooling (E) .
16. Press in the shaft seal with the words on top until the seal is flush with tool (F) .
17. Assemble the heated bearing race (12) on the steer axle hub (6) until contact is obtained.

18. Install the hub (13) on the steer axle hub (6). Fix the hub with the heated inner bearing race
(14) .
19. Assemble internal gear (15) and install bolts (16). Tighten bolts (16) to a torque of 68 N·m
(51 lb ft).
End By: Install the planetary hub of the final drive. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive
(Drive and Steering Axle) (Front) Assemble".

Installation Procedure
1. Use a suitable lifting device in order to install the axle housing. Lift the axle housing at the
arrows.
Note: The weight of the axle housing is approximately 68 kg (150 lb).

2. Use the suitable lifting device in order to support the axle housing. Support the axle housing
at the arrows.
3. Install bolts (3) into the axle housing.

4. Install the ball joint end of the tie rod into steering housing (2). Install tie rod nut (1).
Tighten nut (1) to a torque of 165 N·m (122 lb ft). Install the cotter pin.
5. Fill the differential housing with the proper lubricants. Refer to the Operation and
Maintenance Manual for the proper types and volumes of lubricant.
End By: Install the front axle. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive and Steering Axle (Front) -
Install".
