  1. 1. Lake Maggiore (or Verbano) is ata height of 193 m and covers anarea of 212 square km. Itswestern shore is in Piedmont, itseastern shore in Lombardy, andin the north it enters the Swisscanton of Ticino.Lake Maggiore is the mostwesterly of the three greatprealpine lakes of Italy. Itextends for about 70 kmbetween Locarno and Arona.Lake Maggiore is 68 km long,with a breadth which varies from3 to 5 km, except at the bayopening westward betweenPallanza and Stresa, where thisreaches 10 km.
