the community of Buenos Aires and many prisoners were
kept within its walls. Architectually it changed its appearance
many times. At the turn of the century it was redesigned
when several arches were cut off on each side in order to
construct the Diagonal Sur and de Mayo Avenues. But now
with its patio behind, it has been restored to coincide with
the image developed in every Argentine school child’s
consciousness as the place where freedom from Spain was
first decided, in 1810. There is a small museum, too.
