The Most Notorious Missing Criminals
1. The Most Notorious Missing Criminals
Many individuals and court officials today use companies that provide skip tracing services like those of
Express PS to locate people who have run out on a debt or fugitives who have been charged or
convicted of more serious crimes. The idea behind skip tracing is to collect as much data as possible
about the person and follow up on it to locate them. The fact that there are so few known criminals who
have eluded capture for a significant amount of time gives credence to the fact that professionals know
how to use the obtainable information to their advantage. Those rare cases where criminals have
seemingly vanished from existence are the exception instead of the rule. Some of the most intriguing
cases of missing criminals of our time include:
James “Whitey” Bulger – When infamous mob kingpin Whitey Bulger was apprehended in 2011, the
capture had followed a 14-year period where it seemed as though he had vanished from the planet.
Bulger was accompanied by girlfriend Catherine Greig, who, it turns out, was to blame for their life
on the run coming to an end. We all learned from an interview, which their neighbor Barbara Gluck
gave on 60 Minutes, that Greig had gotten attention for feeding a stray cat after its owner had died.
What wasn’t learned until much later was that the decision to have a “boob job” was the detail that
led FBI to the couple’s hiding place and allowed them to take the most wanted man in the country
into custody. The search through veterinarians, because of the couple’s love of animals, and rumors
of previous plastic surgeries are examples of how information can be used in skip trace services to
find criminals who don’t want to be found.
John Anglin, Clarence Anglin, and Frank Morris – Although most of us have heard the story, the
names of these three convicted criminals do not always come immediately to mind. They were the
three men who escaped San Francisco’s famed Alcatraz maximum security prison in San Francisco,
never to be seen again. The men crawled through air vents, before shimmying down a large
smokestack from the roof to reach the nearby shoreline. Many believe the men died before
reaching land, but their bodies were never found, dead or alive.
Thomas P. “Boston Corbett – You may not recognize the name of the Union Army soldier who killed
John Wilkes Booth in 1865, following his assassination of then-president Abraham Lincoln, but he
also earned fame for having vanished later on. Corbett was under orders to apprehend Booth, but
not to kill him. In spite of going against orders, Corbett became a national hero, leading to the
charges being dropped. He even received a significant amount of money as reward. Unfortunately,
his fame and fortune were short-lived. He became mentally unstable and was committed to an
insane asylum. He escaped a year later and was never seen again. Of course, during the 1800s there
were no professional skip tracing services to use in pursuing Corbett, like there are today!
Aribert Heim – Known as “Dr. Death” due to the horrific medical experiments he performed on Jews
during World War II, Aribert Heim was captured by the U.S. in 1945, and later was released. He
worked as a gynecologist until 1962, when he learned that police were at his home waiting for him.
He vanished and, in spite of numerous stories about his living in Egypt under a different name, no
evidence has ever been found to lead authorities to his capture.
Although some of the notorious criminals have escaped from custody after being arrested, many have
managed to avoid the serving process and have never spent any time in jail. Of the many criminals who
try to avoid capture and arrest today, few have the knowledge or resources to avoid being caught, when
professionals who know how to make the most of all the information available to them are on the job.
