Senior Project Summary
HCA 459: Senior Project
Introduction
Health care sector is experiencing many transformations in service delivery and in patient handling. There are immense trends all around the world including technology that not only change the delivery of health care but also the way the system is conceived (Tan, 2011). In the hospital setting, technology is the pillar for efficiency, accurate record keeping, increased accessibility to healthcare and transition of healthcare to homes. The effects of technology in the County Hospital administrators include efficient support systems which enhance quality services through use of electronic medical records and other information transmission systems. Technological advances enhances understand diseases and discoveries and development of new therapies through genome decoding.
Scope of the senior Project
The impact of technology in regards to employee performance, organization structure and management planning.
Evidence-based medicine through technology will enable healthcare providers to establish standard protocols to be used in treatment of many diseases.
Effects of healthcare trend on treatment cost
In the world today, payers have a huge role in making decision on the type of treatment that a patient receives following the rising cost of medical services. Therefore, it is evident that technology has empowered patients in the choice of treatment option that they receive.
Moreover, technology enhances data management and ultimate coordination among healthcare providers (Ho, 2012). Patient files are easily accessible from anywhere following the extensive use of databases which have also cut down the cost of care services in the hospital. Healthcare providers can use invasive procedures with the increased technological advances. Imaging has reduced the task of examination by technicians and physicians on human anatomy.
Effects of health care trend on quality and access of services
Advent of technology has enabled realization of reduced mortality and thus increased life expectancy. Improved technology enhances quality services and these services have been individualized to suit every patient. In addition, previously untreatable conditions such as end-stage renal diseases are now treatable mainly due to improvement in capabilities and quality of services (Futurescan, 2011).
The negative impact of technology in healthcare
Internet has provided room for large medical knowledge which creates a platform for self-diagnosis among patients. This poses great and serious damage to a patient’s health and the general wellbeing and in the long run it may lead to increased cost of treatment.
Discussion
Factors that lead to the current trends in healthcare system
There is an increasing demand by the consumers for better health care services. This is the prime factor that results in the increased innovation.

3. Discussion
Factors that lead to the current trends in healthcare system
There is an increasing demand by the consumers for better
health care services. This is the prime factor that results in the
increased innovation and advancement in the use of technology
in the health sector. In pursuing the goal of achieving and
maintaining good health, technology is, therefore, increasingly
sought and utilized.
The strengths of the affected stakeholders
Nowadays, patients have more information regarding their
diseases, wellbeing, and available treatment options in reference
to before the new technologies in the healthcare. This has
enabled the transformation of service delivery to patient
centered treatment rather than diseased centered model. The
internet enables patients to have full control of their own health
through the prevention services that are available to them.
Healthcare providers are now enjoying the design of facilities
that is focused around the patient, staff needs and preference
and patient family members. This system enhances effectiveness
and morale of providers.
Third party payers have the advantage of accessing quality
services which is enhanced with the use of technology. Quality
services will reduce the rate of hospitalization and in long run
reduces the cost incurred in patient treatment (Dey, 2011).
All the stakeholders benefit from the new trend of patient
centered services where the patient and family members are
involved in making decisions about treatment. Patients are
treated with dignity and their private and confidential
information are well preserved.
Weaknesses of the affected stakeholders
Patients may be well equipped with the information about
their medical conditions but they may have inadequate
information that can enable them to make decisions. Even more,
patients may make unsuitable decisions on the care plan that
they can join or the provider that they can visit for
consultations. In addition, some patients are ignorant and
4. unaware of their rights and thus are easily exploited by the
healthcare providers who provide poor quality services.
Third-party payers’ demographic and socioeconomic status may
limit the choice of best quality providers in the current
healthcare system.
Providers have little choice on the patients that they serve as
most patients do not chose the provider based on the cost of the
services as the insurance protects them from the difference in
prices among providers (Dey, 2011). Consumers make their
choices based on the quality of services that are available. The
trend in the healthcare system thus favors patients and the
providers have little choice to make. Moreover, even with the
trend in healthcare, providers do not involve patients in making
decisions about their treatment due to fear that patients may
chose inappropriate treatment or lack of time by the physician.
Conclusion
Through the technological advancement in the current
healthcare trends, patients, providers and third-party payers
have realized efficiency in service delivery. More so, the
quality of services has greatly improved and the access to such
services has been improved with concurrent reduced cost of
acquiring the services. Consumer and family engagement in
decision making have resulted in reduced cost of treatment. The
factors are interrelated and it is evident that high cost of
services and lack of insurance coverage prevents access to the
healthcare and ultimately low quality services which will
consequently lead to hospitalization (Sheingold & Sheingold,
2010).
