The case study details the situation faced by Emerging Market Projects Department of Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions India (RBEI), India in January 2014. RBEI, one of the Bosch group's subsidiaries in India, was established in 1998 at Bangalore, India. The caselet intends to introduce the participants/students to the concept and importance of measurement and scaling in carrying out a marketing research project. In February 2015, Arun Prasad (Arun), a BBM (Bachelor of Business Management) graduate with distinction started an experiential and customer-centric bakery, Chennai Bakers, in Nungambakkam, Chennai. Based on his award-winning business plan and with encouragement from his Professor, friends and family, Arun had established Chennai Bakers' dealing in cakes, pastries, sandwiches, cookies, fruit juices and hot beverages like coffee and tea. For the first few months, the sales were very promising. However, the last two months' (July and August 2015) suddenly sales were plummeting at Chennai Bakers. A good friend, Raghu Ram, advised him to prepare a questionnaire to collect customer feedback. Arun prepared a questionnaire containing just six questions. After having collected the feedback from select customers, Arun was not sure how to process the data to arrive at appropriate conclusions. When Arun met Professor Francis Xavier (Prof. Xavier) and shared his dilemma, he stated categorically that the measurements and scales were not apt and the feedback exercise must be implemented all over again with appropriate measurements and scales. However, Arun required Prof. Xavier’s help in this regard, to achieve apposite conclusions.

This caselet enables an understanding of the application of descriptive and inferential statistics for data analysis. The caselet revolves around identifying the factors that influence the students to pursue management education and in particular those that encourage them to choose a particular top rated B-School. The caselet is structured on the data collected from the 233 respondents who had enrolled for a PGDM program in a premier B-School and the same was utilized to demonstrate methods and suitability of finding few descriptive statistical measures and use of statistical test to find the impact of gender on factors that influence in selection of a B-School.

The last three decades have seen Dettol extending its germ-free campaign from disinfectant to soap to liquid soap categories. Furthermore, Dettol has been vying hard to be the toilet soap of choice by harping on its germ-free bath benefit, thereby taking on Unilever’s Lifebuoy, leading to an overlapping brand promise. This ongoing brand war between Dettol and Lifebuoy has had many a consumer perceive Dettol to be a brand to be placed in the bathroom bracket. In its latest brand xtension avatar, Dettol attempts to take on Vim Liquid, a well-established kitchen cleaner brand from the Unilever stable. Is this a desperate attempt by Reckitt Benckiser (RB) to engage in combat with Unilever that transcends traditionally stablished categories for Dettol? Will this fight for space from the bathroom basins to the kitchenette tops help increase consumer mind share for Dettol? Mr. Swami, HR Manager, CITPR Ltd., found himself in big trouble after not following the HR process carefully. This resulted in a highly chaotic situation placing the careers of 25 students of TTC College of Engineering and Management (TTC) in a quandary when CITPR Ltd., after selecting them in the campus interview, denied them final placement. Overlooking HR planning, delaying the communication and initiating official action based on oral communication poses a serious problem to the participants. Would the students be left in a lurch by CITPR Ltd. and TTC ollege? How far is it justifiable to take decisions based only on verbal commitment?
