Palmer Station is located on Anvers Island in Antarctica. [1] It is owned and operated by the United States as part of the U.S. Antarctic Program. [2] The original Palmer Station was built in 1965, with a new station constructed in 1968. [3] Palmer Station has neighboring research bases and conducts research on local wildlife like penguins and whales, as well as atmospheric studies.
2. When was it made?
There are 2 Palmer
Stations. The first one was
built in 1965 and was
home to the people that
started to build and open
the ‘new’ Palmer station
in 1968.
3. Where is it?
Palmer Station is located on
Anvers Island and is
Antarctica’s only U.S. station
north of the Antarctic circle.
The latitude and longitude is:
64 46” S
64 03” W
4. Who owns it?
Palmer station is
controlled by the U.S. and
is taken care of by the
United States Antarctic
Program.
5. Does it have neighbours?
Yes! Palmer station has 3
neighbouring stations. The
closest would be
Vernadsky Research base.
The other 2 are the San
Martin and Rothera
stations.
6. What does it look like?
Palmer station is mainly
made up of metal
sheds, so that the ice
doesn’t break it. The
station has science labs, a
helicopter pad and boats
to travel to different
places.
7. How is the weather there?
In summer, the weather is
about 2 and in the winter
it can be as low as -10 . It
is very windy and snows a
lot! In winter, the sun
shines for 5 hours but in
winter the sun
is out for
19 hours.
8. Why was it built?
At Palmer station, the workers research how animals live
in the icy water. There are a lot of animals that live next
to the station, like big groups of penguins, seals and
humpback whales. The workers also watch our skies and
study how much lightening happens.
9. What would life be like there?
I think it would be very cold there. The temperature is
like living in a freezer!
But it would be exciting to live there, because there
would be a lot of new things to learn about and see.
10. Thank you for

presentation.
