The Crowsnest Fire was a large wildfire that burned over 20,000 hectares of forest near Hillcrest, Alberta in August 2003. The fire grew rapidly to be 6km wide and 50m tall, forcing the evacuation of local residents including Elaine Husby who found it difficult to decide what to take and felt drawn to watch the intense flames. The fire would have significantly impacted local industries like tourism, timber, and businesses. It presented challenges for Spray Lake Sawmills which held salvage rights for burnt lumber but faced issues with root scorching and costs that affected their salvage efforts.
