2. Verbal irony
A man was walking down the road when he steps in a puddle, "oh
great!" he says. The man does not literally mean that stepping in this
puddle was a great experience but actually quite the opposite, he was
using verbal irony and is having a terrible time.Verbal irony is when
somone says one thing but means something completely opposite.
3. Situational irony
This picture is situational irony.
Dogs are bigger, more powerful
animals compared to cats and
are almost always the ones to
pick a fight with the other. In
this picture, for whatever
reason, the dog seems to be
afraid of the cat and is running.
4. Hyperbole
This picture is hyperbole. If
somone says "this cat weighs a
ton" they dont mean that the cat
literally weighs a ton, they are
saying it it a heavy cat. In the
picture the cat is literally giant.
Hyperbole exaggerates a phrase
to the extreme.
5. Pun
A pun is a play on words. This picture is
playing off of the famous phrase "to be or
not to be" fromWilliam Shakespeares
"Hamlet".The words "be" and "bee"
sound exactly the same out loud but in
context they are actually quite different.
In the picture a bee is saying this which
adds humor.
6. Oxymoron
An oxymoron is a statement that
contradicts itself.This picture is a
good example because it is
written in stone and directly
contradicts what it says. Other
oxymorons include:
• exact estimate
• found missing
• original copy
• act natural
