Question 7
1. Question 7 - Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
2. Both my front covers from my preliminary task and main task display a simplistic look. However, you can clearly see the differences in the way they have been produced and the quality of the finish. Preliminary Cover Main Task Cover
3. PRELIMINARY TASK – The final look of my preliminary front cover is fairly plain, and it doesn’t look very professional as it has few straplines and coverlines. The photo could have been edited to a higher standard. The issue number and date are positioned under the masthead. The freebie adds appeal for the reader. This strapline instantly relates to the target audience Mid close-up of a student – makes is clear who the magazine is for. The barcode is positioned in the bottom right out of the way. The price is positioned sideways by the barcode.
4. MAIN TASK The masthead is big and bold, and the font used ties the magazine to the target audience. The main sell stands out clearly as the name Renee May is in the same blue text as the words “Jazzfusion”. The puff gives a professional finish to the magazine – the blue text makes the genre of the magazine clear. Other bands and artists that are included in the magazine. Letting the audience know whether the magazine is to their taste. The barcode is still positioned in the bottom right hand corner out of the way. The date, issue number and price are all grouped out of the way as well. The image is still a mid close-up. It is more professional looking with the black background. She appears to be looking at her name, showing the cover is well thought out.
5. MAIN TASK – The contents page for my preliminary task was extremely plain and looked unprofessional. My knowledge of QuarkXPress has increased highly, and I have been able to produce a much more professional looking contents page. The editors letter is a nice way to introduce the reader to the months issue. Gives a “personal” touch. The image adds interest to the contents page, but it continues the simplistic theme of the magazine. The subcategories make the contents easy to follow, and it’s simple to fine what you want to read. The variation in font sizes make some things stand out more than others, drawing the readers eye to what is most appealing to the audience.
6. In contrast to my preliminary task, I have chosen to make everything much bolder, giving a much stronger look to the magazine. The simple layout and clean lines have been maintained throughout the entirety of my main task. The preliminary task helped me to improve upon layouts, fonts and the way photos are edited to give a much more professional look to the final product. It has also showed me just how important the planning and preparation is – otherwise you end up with a messy looking product.
