3. You should understand the the deeper meaning of
the following themes in the story and be able to a)
discuss them and b) give examples from the story
- The game of chess in the story (why is it significant,
what is it a metaphor for? Why did the writer choose
to write about chess?)
- - Meimi as a character between two worlds- which
worlds? Explain how she belongs to both worlds and
the conflict between them.
- -The relationship between Meimi and her mother: is
it positive, negative, why? Explain your answer with
examples from the story.

5. You will be given a short text which is
connected to certain themes in the story you
must show that you understand that
connection by making connections and
illustrating them with examples from the text
Example, if the text talks about the
challenges of chinese immigrant families we
can answer as follows: ‘From this text I see
that the lives of Chinese immigrants was
(difficult/challenging etc) . This is also shown
in the story when we see how Meimi lives in a
small apartment above a bakery and we don’t
see her father because he works long hours.’
6. Make sure that you have completed the log
and you didn’t simply copy it – if you copied
it you will not be able to answer the
questions!
