Social Support Systems and Breastfeeding Teenage Mothers Elizabeth Barley 1071363
Fewer than 18% of pregnant teenage mothers plan to breastfeed, and only a small percentage follow through on that decision once their baby is delivered. (La Leach League International, 2006)
Why I chose this topic and the particular research question. ,[object Object]
Experienced out on clinical Antenatal and Postnatal care of teenage mothers and saw:
Lack of knowledge about breastfeeding and the importance of it
Social support and Postnatal care heavily influenced their decision to formula feed
What social support & environment would change teenagers breastfeeding perspectives?
and which are the most effective?,[object Object]

  • 9. Why the specific research design and methods were chosen Qualitative (emergent) design was chosen because…….. Of wanting to collect individual stories To see if in collecting the individual stories that there would be an emergent pattern and themes that come through to help highlight which are the most important social support systems which encourage the mothers to feed. Its personable To see how and why different support systems influence teenage mothers and which are the most effective
  • 10. How the study proposes to analyse the data Noticing: Making observations, tape recording interviews, field notes & gathering documents. Collecting: Codes that “summerize, synthesize and sort out” multiple observations. While staying ethically correct Thinking: Comparing and contrasting individual information. Editor's Notes

  1. I have an interest in Teenage mothers, would love to specialize in teenage mother/pregnancies when graduatedWhile I’ve been out on Clinical, been able to experience a lot of antenatal and PN care of teenage mothers and have noticed their lack of interest and knowledge on how important breastfeeding is compared to bottle-feeding.as well as their perspective of not really understanding what their bodies are capable of- wanted to know if social support and environment/culture would change perspectives on Bfing?? And see how important/influential their midwife is for them. Or if social support (partner, family, friends etc) had more of an influence.
  2. Introduce the research question : )
  3. The research results found will define what social supports are effective and can encourage the teenage adolescent mother to breastfeed successfully. The qualitative research in regard to this topic will be an emergent design, one where information gathered will be ‘emerging’ as the interview responses come in with the researcher, therefore making ongoing decisions reflecting on what has already been learned (Polit & Hungler, 1997).
  4. Qualitative data analysis will be conducted. It is compromised of three areas: 1. Noticing: making observations, tape recording interviews where required, writing field notes and gathering documents. 2. Collecting: creating codes that serve to summarize, synthesize and sort out multiple observations made of the data, “pulling together and categorizing a series of otherwise discrete events, statements, and observations” which will be recognized within the data (Charmaz, 1983),3. Thinking: to “compare and contrast” each of the individual information from the teenage mothers that will be noticed, so to discover similarities and differences or find sequences and patterns (Squire, 2007). This process is repetitive and progressive because it is a cycle that keeps repeating. There will be times when, during the process that the researcher will be thinking about information and also start noticing other information in the data, then the data is collected and the new information will be thought about again, quite like a process that will not really stop (Squire, 2007).
  5. 1:what are the social support systems 2:The expected relevance, application and contribution that the research findings will give to midwifery practice, is the knowledge of the most effective support systems that encourage the teenage mother to make positive decisions about breastfeeding3: In turn these support systems can be initiated, explored and encouraged when working with the teenage mother during her antenatal and postnatal care for optimal health of both teenage mother and baby.
