Schladen is a rural joint community in the north of the Harz mountains and close to the former
border in Germany. It consists of four villages: Schladen, Hornburg, Gielde and Werlaburgdorf.
The areas ate historically quite different: Hornburg is a little romantic, timber-framed village, over
1000 years old, while Werlaburgdorf has a little imperial palace which dates back to 931.
The traditional occupations of the inhabitants are in agriculture, animal breeding, forestry and
many people are working in the administrative roles within the towns in the region.
Renewable Energy Sources
Now: A solar installation company located in Schladen has built many photovoltaic panels on
several roofs in citizen contracting.
Future: The village Beuchte will become the 2nd low-emission-community in lower Saxony. The
basis for this achievement lies in a wood chip boiler and a steam pipe to the private consumers. A new
biogas boiler plant should supply new heat consumers.
Rational Use of Energy
Now: Annual energy meeting.
Future: The focus is on saving energy in existing public and private buildings with thermal
isolation, in combination with rising biomass and solar energy consumption.
