2. What is Direct Debit?
• An instruction to a payer’s bank or building society for an
organisation to take (“pull”) money from their account when
required
• The amounts and dates are not fixed; everything is variable
• The organisation must give the payer sufficient notice
(normally 10 working days) if the dates/amounts differ (e.g. a
letter or invoice)
• Direct Debit reports on exceptions only; you only receive
reports when something didn’t happen (e.g. unpaids, closed
accounts, indemnity claims etc.)

3. Who is Direct Debit suited to?
• Organisations receiving Regular payments
(e.g. monthly/quarterly)
• Both fixed and variable amounts can be catered for
• Where time reconciling payments is at a premium (reports by
exception)
• Organisations where speedy notification of a failed payment is
important
• Example organisations: Charities, Housing Associations, Gyms,
Golf Clubs, Utility Companies, Telecoms, Membership
Associations, Trade Unions, Health Clubs, B2B relationships.

4. When not to use Direct Debit…
• Where a product is shipped before payment is taken
• Single / “one-off” payments
• When the interval between payments is longer than one year
• Where the customer profile will lead to a high incidence of
unpaids
• Where there is a very low volume of transactions
