2. WHAT ARE MOLES?
 Moles are black/brown growth that can
appear anywhere on the skin. Moles can
develop on the scalp, between the fingers
and toes, on the soles and palms, and even
under the nails.
 They may be present in different shapes,
sizes. Even in the same person, moles can
differ in size, shape, or color. Some moles
will change slowly over time, possibly even
disappearing

3. WHAT CAUSES THE FORMATION OF
MOLE?
• The reason behind their growth is the spread of
melanocytes in clusters spreading across the skin. Mostly
moles appear by the age of 20, some may appear later in
life.

4. • HOW IS A MOLE DIFFERENT FROM
MELANOMA??
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer. A mole on your
body has these traits:
 One color - Often brown, but a mole can be tan,
black, red, pink, blue, skin-toned, or colorless.
 Round in shape.
 Flat or slightly raised.
 Looks the same from month to month.

6. HOW CAN THE MOLES BE
REMOVED?
• SHAVE BIOPSY
• During a shave biopsy, a scalpel is used to shave off the
mole. There are no stitches required with a shave biopsy.
• EXCISION BIOPSY
• During an excision biopsy, a scalpel is used to cut the border
surround the mole. The mole is removed, and stitches are
placed. If the mole is suspected to be cancerous, it will be
tested in a lab to be sure that all of the affected tissue has
been removed

7. • CRYOSURGERY
• Non-cancerous, surface moles can be frozen off
with liquid nitrogen. The only drawback is that it
might create a blister, but will heal on its own. The
advantage being there are no stitches required.

8. LASER REMOVAL
• Small, flat, non-cancerous moles can often be removed via laser
treatment. Strong bursts of light break down the mole cells.
Usually, two or three treatments are needed to remove the mole
completely. The underlying skin is left undamaged and there is no
bleeding through laser treatment

9. HEAT APPLICATION
• Moles or skin tags may be burned off using an
electric current passing through a hot wire.
• The area is first numbed with an anesthetic and the
heat itself helps prevent any bleeding.
• It does not normally leave scars or marks.

10. WILL THE MOLE REMOVAL
CAUSE SCARRING?
• There will always be a scar when you remove a
mole, but it depends on the technique that the
doctor uses, the size of the mole, where the mole is
located and your skin type.
• The best thing you can do is to wait for the wound
to heal and then apply some vitamin E oil to it.

12. IS IT NECESSARY TO REMOVE
MOLES?
• While you can develop skin cancer without being born with
moles, they can develop into cancer. The key for any skin
type is to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. UVA and
UVB rays can mutate your natural skin cells, causing
uncontrollable cellular growth.
• Therefore, don’t stay in the sun for long periods of time.
Always wear a broad-spectrum UV sunscreen, and apply it
regularly when exposed to the sun for more than a few
hours.
