Arrhythmia is the medical term for problems with the rhythm of the
heart. Over 2 million people will experience some form of arrhythmia
in the UK each year. If properly diagnosed, most people with arrhyth-
mia will be able to lead a normal life.

The most common diagnostic tool for
arrhythmia is an electrocardiogram, or
ECG. This device records and monitors
the rhythm of the heart and can detect
any disturbances. If exercise has been
flagged as a trigger for symptoms, pa-
tients may be asked to use an exercise
bike or treadmill while hooked up to the
ECG monitor. A portable ECG may also
be used to record symptoms over a pe-
riod of 24 hours or more.
There are a variety of possible treat-
ments that will be suggested depend-
ing on the type and severity of the
arrhythmia and the patient medical
history. These include having a pace-
maker fitted, or certain medications be-
ing prescribed. Electric shocks may be
applied through cardioversion while the
patient is sedated or anaesthetized, or
an ICD can be fitted to administer gen-
tle shocks when required.
