With miles of sandy beaches, endless winter sunshine and a laid-back vibe, there's no reason to leave
your four-legged friend behind when you vacation in Florida. From lodging that offers special pet
beds, to beaches with off-leash play, to theme parks with nearby kennels, many places around the
state accommodate visitors with pets. Many Florida state parks also allow leashed dogs.
It was still a half-hour before departure when I reached the check-in counter for my flight, but the
clerk told me the counter had closed. I explained that my flight from Shanghai had been delayed.
After a lot of people talking to each other I was put on an Air Canada flight leaving an hour-and-
a-half later.
For vegetarians, vegans, those who don't eat pork, can't have gluten or those who are scared of
street food, this trip would have been a challenge. Luckily, my own restriction — high prices —
posed no problem. Thirty renminbi for a meal was a rare extravagance, even in simpler sit-down
restaurants. I broke 50 only once, during a 10-course street food gorgefest in Wuhan. And I ate so
many delicious dumplings and bowls of noodles that I sometimes wanted to bring the vendors home
with me.
The full schedule for what I think can safely be called the most exciting weekend in the annual New
York City calendar is now posted online, and New Yorkers can pick up copies at designated locales,
in preparation for tomorrow's craziness. Rest assured that even once the most sought-after events
are booked up, there will still be roughly a zillion options open for those two days, Saturday and
Sunday, October 11-12. Note that this year for the first time there are evening programs both days:
tours of the lighting systems of storied structures around the city (all requiring advance
registration).
2. during the time i was working in shandong, i had noticed the shape of local people's skull are pretty
much similar to the typical hindo-europeans. my father, who was orginally from shandong, had this
type of skull shape with deep eye scoket. however, i whose mother side had 1/2 manchurian triant,
did not succeed most of my father's skull appearence.
The four of us departed 'Hare last Thursday and after the 13 hour flight, an hour long bus ride and
two hours on a train, we were greeted in Nanjing at the train station by two staff members from the
host university - Roy and Demi. They were as excited to see us as we were tired from our journey.
We arrived at our hotel and had a quick meal - an achievement in China- and collapsed in our room.
The conference began the next morning.
Be aware of pick-pockets, as you should when in any big city or foreign country. Have a short chain
connecting your belongings to yourself. In crowded areas, such as train stations, wear your
backpack/purse on the front of your body, instead of on your back. Use carry-on locks on your
zippers. Wear your wallet in a chest pocket. Dress in black formal attire, and look around as if sizing
people up for a fight (if you're a man) to intimidate thieves. If you're a woman, you're SOL since
most Chinese do not consider women dangerous or intimidating.
