2. Introduction
In May 2015, the Drexel University Center for
Integrated Nutrition & Performance hosted its 4th
Annual Sports Nutrition Conference in
collaboration with the College of Nursing and
Health Professionals and University Wellness.
During the conference, Dominic D’Agostino,
University of South Florida assistant professor of
molecular pharmacology and physiology,
delivered a talk titled “Metabolic Strategies for
Enhanced Performance & Body Composition.”
In this talk, Dominic D’Agostino explored how
ketogenic diets low in carbohydrates and high in
fat can optimize health and athletic performance.

His research involves the development of ketone
supplements and amino acid formulas for
therapeutic applications, including prevention of
muscle wasting associated with motor neuron
diseases.
Other speakers at the conference included Janet
Walberg Rankin, professor of human nutrition,
foods, and exercise at Virginia Tech, who
discussed issues of weight gain and loss in
athletes, and Dr. Ellen Casey, assistant professor
of sports medicine at Drexel. Dr. Casey looked at
the scientific understanding of the female athlete
triad and how it has evolved in recent years.
