and dietary therapies for disorders that impact movement, muscles,
motor function and cognition. In a recently published study,
Dominic D'Agostino discussed ketone esters and their potential for
use as a therapy in Angelman syndrome.
A rare genetic disorder, Angelman syndrome is characterized by
developmental delays, movement disorders, and lack of speech. The
syndrome is commonly misdiagnosed as autism or cerebral palsy
because it shares genetic links and symptoms with these conditions.
Angelman syndrome does not yet have a cure. Though the condition
can be managed with antiseizure medication and therapy, people
with Angelman syndrome generally require lifelong medical care.

3. Angelman Syndrome
• Recent research shows that a specialized ketogenic diet
may be useful in the management of Angelman
syndrome. The ketogenic diet can produce beneficial
anticonvulsant effects, but the strict diet is often
inappropriate for patients because they commonly
experience problems with weight and selective eating.
A recent study suggests that ketone ester
supplementation may be useful for Angelman syndrome
therapy in the future. Ketone ester supplements contain
ketones in a concentrated format, eliminating the need
for a high-fat ketone-producing diet.
