2. Every single mobile device has to be
regularly connected to a power
source to charge its battery and as
so many electronic devices are now
an integral part of our daily routine
there is a constant need to find a
safe and convenient charging point
to do this.
There are a multiplicity of low cost USB
adapters on the market, Use of these
products may result in damage to expensive
gadgets,for example by an overload ruining
batteries, or by electronic noise damaging
screens. So, safety was a major
consideration for Crabtree when
designing a USB charging outlet.
Portable adapters are also notoriously
inefficient, wasting energy by not powering down
when energy is not required.Trailing leads are a
recognised hazard in the workplace, and they all
need regular visual inspection and PAT testing
to ensure that they are sound and can continue
to be used.
Facilities
Managers and
Health and
Safety officers
will, quite rightly,
discourage and
minimise the use of trailing leads and unapproved
devices. So, should they be there in the first place?
If there’s a better, safer alternative, then obviously
not! This is one of the reasons why Crabtree USB
chargers are designed to be installed into a fixed
point in the installation. Fixed installation USB
chargers take away the risk of people bringing
unapproved chargers and leads into the workplace
and then using them in an unsatisfactory or
unsafe manner.
Eradicating trailing leads is one thing but there
is the USB charger performance to think of too.
For example, what is the power output capacity?
Is there any integral protection against overheating?
Does the charger outlet automatically power down
when the device is fully charged? These are all
important safety considerations.
Crabtree USB charging outlets incorporate integral
protection and are fused to eliminate the risk of
overheating.They automatically power down when
the connected device is fully charged, and in line
with LowVoltage Directive 2006/95/EC, they are
capable of delivering a full 1A independently from
each outlet, even when two devices are connected
simultaneously, in compliance with the latest
battery charging specification some alternative
chargers fall short of this USB charging
specification, and unfortunately share the 2A load

3. across both outputs, which not only infringes the
specification but can also give inconsistent charging
output.The tablet may get all of the 2A and the
other device appears to get nothing. In this
scenario the second device may get some power,
but if it is not enough, the device will refuse to
charge.The Crabtree USB outlet however suffers
from none of this and provides a balanced output
across both USB ports.This gives the Crabtree
user a safe, protected, power saving, high capacity
charging facility.
Convenience was also one of the factors high on
the design agenda.The Crabtree system of USB
modules as part of the fixed installation allows the
system designer and installer to provide a neat and
safe fixed facility for portable electronic equipment
charging.
There was also the matter of colour, style and
appearance to consider.
In today’s often
eclectic design
environment
a wide variety of finishes is essential
to meet the aesthetic needs of
specifiers and end users. Crabtree
USB socket modules are designed to
simply clip into a standard data
module frame plate that is available
in a choice of designs and finishes
including Low Profile Platinum,
Decorative Raised Plate, Part M and
White Moulded.There’s even an
outdoor Weatherseal IP56 version for
more arduous environments. Straightforward
installation was without a doubt also important.
That’s why Crabtree USB charging modules are
able to accept up
to three 2.5mm
cables in the
power terminals,
and can thus be
easily installed as
an integral part
of a ring circuit
or on a fused
spur (however
installers should
not mix mains
operated & low
