Diplomacy is the most important way for countries to conduct foreign relations, with ambassadors now known as diplomats. Unofficial diplomacy involves famous individuals helping publicize issues in other countries. In the 17th century, France centralized its embassies under Cardinal de Richelieu to control information flows, and diplomats are granted legal immunity under the 1961 Vienna Convention to not follow some laws of the countries they work in.
