Burnum is a 13-year-old Aboriginal boy living in Australia in the early 1900s. He describes the discrimination he faces daily from white Australians who see Aboriginal people as inferior. Burnum and his family and other Aboriginal people are often refused service, glared at, and isolated from white children and society in general. Despite this discrimination, Burnum enjoys playing with other Aboriginal children and hopes that one day Aboriginal and white people can live together in peace, though experiences of past violence make him question whether getting along with white people is possible.
