Simugens Crowd Dynamics is a software tool that we provide to the customers as a service for the simulation of the crowd dynamics, entirely developed by D&T – SHRAIL Division, capable of realistically simulate the behavior of individuals (up to thousands), wall constraints and other typical elements of crowd situations (signs, danger, information, …). Simugens Crowd Dynamics is based on a representation of the individuals of the crowd by means of agents with partial behavior motion model on continuous unstructured space. This approach allows the accurate representation of arbitrary environments, complex barriers and large spaces without the constraints imposed by grid or cells structures.

SHRAIL has been developing innovative solutions for simulation
and training in public transport since the 90s.
Its main achievements include the software for training
management and SIM.ACEI simulators, employed by RFI
(Ferrovie Dello Stato/State Railways) and FerrovieNord for the
training of Movement Managers.
In recent years, SHRAIL has developed SimuRAIL, a modular
system for driving training for rail and road transport vehicles
through immersive 3D simulation in real time, used by TRENORD
on the routes of Lombardy.
The product range is completed by SimuGENS, software for the
simulation of crowd dynamics covering transport, large
structures and public places.

SimuGENS is proprietary software developed
entirely by D&T/SHRAIL for the simulation of crowd
dynamics
SimuGENS can simulate the behaviour of
individuals in large groups (also in the case of
tens of thousands of people), modelling constraints
and other typical elements of the conditions of
crowds (signs, dangers, directions) in 3D space,
importing the geometries directly from CAD and
displaying the crowd dynamics in both two
dimensions and 3D.

In SimuGENS the crowd is represented by
single individuals (agents) following a partial
behaviour model (partial behaviour model)
SimuGENS manages a continuous space,
without the limits imposed by grid or cell
structures, as in other software. It is therefore
possible to accurately represent:
- environments of arbitrary form (buildings,
corridors, streets, docks...)
- complex obstacles (walls, handrails, barriers,
controlled access, vegetation...)
- large spaces (stations, city districts, areas for
outdoor concerts, exhibition areas for fairs...)

INTEGRATION WITH OTHER SHRAIL SIMULATORS
SimuGENS can be integrated with SHRAIL.SimuRAIL (simulation of
vehicles on iron and on rubber) and SHRAIL.SimuSHIP (simulation of
ferries and boats), allowing to
- represent realistic vehicles in crowd simulations
- represent the crowd in driving simulations
- perform integrated simulations in the same virtual world
SimuGENS can be executed in real time (depending on the power of the
computer) while also modifying parameters of the simulation, for example
by activating dangers or opening emergency exits.

SimuGENS mathematical model
CROWD: the crowd is represented by one or more groups of
individuals. Each group may have different characteristics,
behaviours, intentions, origins and destinations
INDIVIDUALS: each individual is represented by a cylinder with
characteristics of volume, mass, maximum speed, behavioural
handicaps.
WALLS: individuals are constrained by barriers of arbitrary shapes
which can represent: rigid or non-rigid walls, masonry, barriers,
awnings, rigid or non-rigid transparent walls, gates, windows,
vegetation.
POLES: individuals are influenced by elements (poles): attractors,
repulsors, or other factors that encourage movement. Poles can
be: visual indications, signs, emergency lights, exits, visible
dangers such as flames, threats, signs; generic destinations,
directions, destinations, or audio announcements.

2D view
It is possible to visualise the behaviour of the populations in two-
dimensional (plan), in real time, on the map, representing in a
concise and immediate way parameters of interest in the crowd as
pressure, speed, distance travelled, group membership
3D view
It is possible to visualise the simulation in 3D (Virtual Reality) as well
as in real time (in keeping with the computing power).
EXPORTING RESULTS
It is possible to export the simulated quantities in the form of tables
of numerical results or graphs of significant results of analysis.
It is also possible to export qualitative/visual results in the form of
static images or digital videos
