Leave your lover – sam smith - Lyrical/Narrative Cohesion
1. Leave Your Lover – Sam
Smith
Introduction to the music video is an
establishing shot of the city skyline,
panning across the sky at sunrise.
This shot will be taken by me,
from the top of the new
Birmingham Library on Broad
Street.
The lyrics start 14 seconds after the song
begins, so this will be a full 360 pan of the
city and will establish where and when the
video will take place.
2. I don't have much to give, but I don't care for gold;
What use is money, when you need someone to hold?
Two friends depicted walking through town centre, laughing, joking around
with each other. Lighting is naturalistic and these first two lines play over
the top. Link to ‘what use is money’ as they are not shopping, they’re just
walking round enjoying each other’s company.
Clothes will be
casual and
comfortable as they
are just enjoying a
day out together.
Slow paced editing
builds up emotion
within song.
3. Don't have direction I'm just rolling down this road,
Waiting for you to bring me in from out the cold.
The friends arrive at a house and
I am inside preparing tea and we
all sit in the lounge, put music
on and have a laugh while we
get ready. This links to ‘bring me
in from out the cold’ as they are
coming inside to have a good
time. Camera will follow them
walking up to the house.
This scene continues from the last and
they walk inside, and unpack their
bags. The clothes are slightly more
formal as they will be going out for
lunch. Camera will follow them inside
and be stationery inside the living
room so that I can be revealed and
start getting ready.
4. You'll never know the endless nights, the rhyming of the rain,
Or how it feels to fall behind and watch you call his name.
I’d love for it to be raining outside
so while we are filming inside, the
rain creates the sombre mood
contrasting the fun, happy mood
inside. The camera will move in
this scene to show them getting
ready, and also depict me being
alone and feeling lonely now
friends have got here. Hinting at
the message of ‘unrequited love.’
This links to the bold words of
‘how it feels to fall behind.’
We will still be getting ready in this scene, as
the line is quite short. This line is the bridge and
is repeated again later in the song. The video
will be relatable as my target audience of
younger people will be able to relate to ‘getting
ready’ and feeling insecure and alone.
Using a close-up of us getting ready, this will
show like an invasion of personal space.
