Welcome
Welcome to Experience Osterville 2018! This year’s
guide includes a great article on wildlife in our beautiful
Three Bays watershed, a look at what it’s like behind the
scenes at the library, and of course, a complete calendar
of Osterville village events. Also, as you scroll or page
through our guide, take a look at all the new advertisers
we’ve brought into the fold. These are companies and
professionals who want your attention and think they
can get it through Experience Osterville.
Readers, you are a highly sought-after market. Osterville
residents and visitors rank right at the top in spending
on our advertiser’s products. You buy houses, cars,
home furnishings, food, entertainment, sporting goods,
hardware and professional services. And restaurants!
You eat out, a lot!
For Osterville to remain a small, personable village, not

in the Three Bays
Watershed
Cape Cod — the name conjures up images of
sandy beaches and endless waves. The 12,458-
acre Three Bays watershed not only has the
beaches and waves, but also includes bays, salt
marshes, rivers, ponds and cranberry bogs.
These diverse habitats in our watershed are
home to a variety of wildlife species, if you
know where to look.
The intertidal zone — the area between a beach
and the water itself — is alive with all kinds of
wildlife, large and small. It’s not uncommon to
spot a tiny grey and black-ringed shorebird with
fast-moving feet scuttering from the wrack line to
the water’s edge and back. These piping plovers
make the trip from the Bahamas to nest on our
beaches and raise their young. Other birds seen
along the beach include cormorants, herring
gulls, Least and Common terns, and willets.
Jellies can be seen pulsating throughout the
shallow and deeper waters around the bays and
beaches. Some of these species, like the milky-
white and pinkish sea nettle with incredibly long
tentacles, to the wide pink moon jelly, can deliver
a painful sting to whoever accidentally crosses
its path. The sea nettle is a favorite snack of sea
turtles found swimming off shore. Much more
plentiful along the shoreline are comb jellies,
small, clear, and iridescent, which have no stinging
capabilities. While wading in the water, take
caution not to accidentally step on any crabs
buried in the sand.

Blue crabs will stop and hold their claws up, ready
to fight, while a lady crab will be more likely to
swim away. Fiddler crabs live in the grasses and
salt marshes adjacent to the water’s edge. The
male fiddler crab has one exceptionally large claw
to attract females, hence their name. These crabs
won’t pinch unless provoked.
Despite being the largest “crab” found in the
Three Bays watershed, horseshoe crabs are in fact
more closely related to spiders and have been
around since before dinosaurs roamed the earth.
Their tails are often mistaken for a stinger, when
in fact they serve as a rudder and a tool used for
flipping themselves over. You will often find what
appears to be many horseshoe crabs scattered
along the beach. These are empty shells from
when they molt and grow a new and larger one.
While walking, don’t forget to keep an eye out for
the variety of shells scattered along the shoreline
and in the water. Scallops, slipper shells, mussels,
jingle shells, quahogs, moon snails, periwinkles,
whelks and oysters are some of the more common
species you will find in our watershed.
When thinking about the Three Bays watershed,
it’s important to not forget the animals that live
near and in our rivers and ponds.
A favorite pastime among both locals and tourists
alike is kayaking. Slowly paddling along the edge
of a pond, one can encounter multiple species
of colorful lilies and berries. Birds like great blue
herons and green herons can be found slowly
stalking their next meal along the water’s edge,
taking each step slowly and deliberately. Bullfrogs
and snakes love using these lilies and aquatic
grasses for sunbathing and protection from
predators. If you do happen to encounter a snake,
take comfort in the fact that Cape Cod contains
no venomous snakes; although some species
such as the black racer and northern water snake
can be aggressive. Northern water snakes can
also be seen curled up along sunny banks of a
pond or river.

typically strewn around ponds, creating a perfect

turtles. If you get too close, the turtles will plop
into the water, where they will swim toward shade
to hide from predators. Other turtle species,
including snapping turtles, call the muddy bottom
of a pond or stream their home, occasionally
coming to the surface for a quick breath or meal.
Keep your eyes open for these turtles. They have
an extremely powerful bite that can do serious
damage to limbs.
As you wander through the watershed, don’t
forget to look up. Often, you can see an osprey
soaring high above. If you’re lucky, you’ll witness
an osprey dive for its food. They drop toward the
water at full speed and hit the surface like a bullet,
spraying water in every direction. If successful, the
osprey will be clutching a fish in their sharp talons
as they fly back to their nest perched high above
in a tree, on a utility or osprey pole, or a chimney.
If you look carefully, you may catch a glimpse of
a fish swimming underwater in the bays, rivers or
ponds. A variety of fish species live in the Three
Bays watershed including blueback and alewife
herring, American eels, striped bass, flounder,
killifish, scup, and pickerel, to name a few.
As you can see, the waters throughout the
Three Bays watershed are home to many different
species. We must work together to protect and
preserve these waters for future generations.

Pack your bags and board the train to the West Barnstable train
station. Captain Bursley will be waiting with his stagecoach to take
you to your destination. Through a heavily wooded dirt path, your
coach will emerge by the seaside in the small village of Osterville.
Main Street is lined with beautiful trees and private homes. Down
the lane you catch the warm afternoon sea breeze from the bays.
The ocean is not far. First stop? The West Bay Inn.
The West Bay Inn was located directly on the waters of West Bay
off Eel River Road. An ad in the July 11, 1914 edition of the Boston
Evening Transcript states: The West Bay Inn is a “Modern Hotel,
directly on the water, open until October 1. Always cool, fine
bathing beach on property. Cuisine the best on Cape Cod. Seafood
a specialty. Reduced rates for September. Special prices to Clubs.
Send for booklet E. S. Crocker, Proprietor.”
The West Bay Inn was built in 1905
and, like most inns in Osterville,
offered easy access to boating
and a bathing beach. Boasting
65 rooms, the West Bay Inn was
a very popular destination with
sweeping views of Nantucket
Sound. It faced the southwest and
because of its location, was able
to take advantage of the prevailing
ocean breeze. It was reported
to be the coolest location in all
of Osterville.

Osterville’s Historic Inns & Lodges cont’d
In October of 1935, a massive fire broke out one evening at the
West Bay Inn. Despite the response from the Centerville-Osterville
fire department and help from the villages of Hyannis and Cotuit,
the building was a complete loss. At the time, damages were
estimated at $50,000. In today’s figures, that would be over $1
million. There was no wind that night, so buildings nearby were
not damaged. Hundreds of people came to watch the massive
glow from the inferno. The inn had been unoccupied for two weeks,
according to the owner Edward S. Crocker. The property had been
advertised for sale. It was only partially covered by insurance.
The East Bay Lodge, located on
East Bay Road, was built in 1886
by retired sea captain Nelson H.
Bearse, Jr. It dominated the seaside
landscape of Osterville during its
glory years in the early 1900s.
On a sunlit summer day, the view
from the tree-lined driveway next to
the lodge was magnificent. Visitors
called it one of “the choicest resorts
on the New England shore.” In
June of 1904, a Sunday afternoon
dinner at East Bay Lodge cost 75¢.
The East Bay Lodge changed owners
throughout the years until it was
demolished in the late 1990s to
makeway for condominiums.
Many Cape Cod families remember staying at
the lodge, celebrating weddings there, or enjoying
a traditional Sunday brunch.
The interior furnishings of the East Bay Lodge were
lavish for the day. Oriental rugs covered the wooden
floors, and upholstered and wooden furniture
decorated the main rooms.

The dining rooms were set with white tablecloths, fine china (see
below), and silver. Despite closing in 1998, the china and silver
are still highly collectible, as are ads and matchbook covers.
Occasionally memorabilia can still be found in Cape Cod
antiques shops.
The Crosby House on West Bay Road was originally the home
of Mrs. Tirzah Crosby. Her son Horace and his wife Lucy opened
the Crosby House as a hotel in 1860. Each year, they continued
to add on to the house to increase capacity. At its height, the
Crosby House could host up to 50 guests.
In an August 18, 1891 newspaper article, the guests at the Crosby
House reportedly enjoyed a “hop” (party) at one of the boat shops
the previous Saturday night. The grandson of the owners, Harold
Crosby, eventually took over the Crosby House. Its reputation for
being a hospitable place continued with a July 17, 1920 Masquerade
party in which Crosby himself was crowned “King.”
Another direct mail piece beckoned guests to stay at the Crosby
House during the winter months. “Call Cotuit 196 and say that you
are coming to spend a few days with us. The house is steam heated
throughout, unexcelled table, moderate prices. Rates $6.00 per day,
special weekly rates. Five golf courses within an hour’s ride, excellent
fishing, 15 miles of good shore bird shooting. Anticipating the
pleasure of seeing you, I remain very truly yours, Laurence Welch,
Manager, Leonard J. Bliss, Proprietor.” The inn was sold in 1927
to Bliss, and it became known as Osterville Manor.
Many smaller inns were located throughout Osterville. The Spruce
Tree Lodge located on Parker Road was another small inn operated
by Jeanette Bowes. It was previously the summer house of Misses
Josephine and Margaret Carret of Boston. That
building was torn down in the 1970s to make
way for condos.

Further down Parker Road, you would find
Aunt Tempy’s Tea House. Named after
Temperance Crocker Parker, Aunt Tempy’s
was another place to enjoy a mid-day meal.
The Lincoln Club House was located on
“Breezy Bluff” just before the bridge to
Oyster Harbors. In 1895, the Josiah A.
Ames house began welcoming a large
group of “fresh air” boys along with their
teachers. Ames worked with the Lincoln
Club in Boston, and the program brought
children to Osterville for short vacations
throughout the summer months. It was
expanded to include young girls and
mothers with babies. It was designed
to give them “a chance to breathe the
fresh, country air, and return to their work
refreshed and strengthened.” Today,
you can easily see the “A-frame” roofed
houses at the beginning of the bridge
to Oyster Harbors.
The grand Cotocheset House located
on Sea View Avenue was the largest of
Osterville’s hotels. The original building
was built in 1873 by a group that included
Scudders and Crockers among others. It
offered a number of amenities including
tennis courts, a bowling alley, a freshwater
lake, easy access to the beach, pier, and

boardwalk. The original building burned in 1887 after a fire was
discovered on the third floor by two members of the staff — Lizzie
Small and Hattie Lovell. Luckily, all of the guests were able to
evacuate with enough time to safely retrieve their belongings.
Construction on the new building began the next day.
Thankful Hamblin Ames, who lived on East Bay
Road with her husband Granville Ames, served as
the proprietor of the Cotocheset House. The day
following the fire at the Cotocheset, she served a
full dinner under a tent to all of the guests. She was
one of the first women to vote in Osterville after the
Women’s Suffrage Amendment passed in 1920.
Daniel Webster’s house in Boston provided the
original stone foundation for the Cotocheset. His
mansion burned to the ground in 1872. The name
Cotocheset came from the Native American who
originally owned the land.
In 1916, the Cotocheset became the Wianno Club. Due to its
architectural and historical significance, the Wianno Club was
added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
Another local club that featured a hotel as well as a
golf course was The Seapuit Club, which stretched
over 1,000 acres in Osterville and Marstons Mills.
The Mayflower was the name of the main 50-room
inn. It was torn down in 1932 at a cost of $400,
although the golf course was still used for several
more years.
Today, in the age of Airbnb, VRBO and cozier bed
and breakfasts, Osterville’s historic hotels are a
quaint memory of a more gracious time.

We traditionally have a lot of seasonal visitors on Cape Cod.
Friends and relatives abound during the summer months in
Osterville. But when you mention names like Carol and Bob,
a different kind of visitor comes to mind.
Hurricane Bob (August 19, 1991) remains fresh in most memories
with Cape-wide loss of power for over a week and over $1 billion
in damage to Massachusetts alone.
When Bob arrived on Cape Cod, he was a weakening category
2 hurricane. However, he still packed enough of a punch that
hundred-year-old trees on East Bay Road simply toppled over.
The leafy canopy providing shade on the winding road was
altered forever. Waves were so high in the gale force winds
that they crashed over the bridge to Oyster Harbors. And many
boats ended up far off in the marshes surrounding the bays.
Bob hit on a Monday morning in the height of the summer season.
Many people joined in an 11-mile back-up at the Sagamore Bridge
in an attempt to get off-Cape. In the days after the storm passed
through, the salt spray from the ocean caused the leaves of trees
to prematurely turn brown. It was as if fall had hit overnight.
The Cape Cod tourism industry took a big loss that August and
September. Most of the public relations effort centered around,
“Yes. Cape Cod is still open for business.”
And then there was Carol in 1954. Hurricane Carol, and her twin
sister Edna, hit Cape Cod as category 3 storms. In fact, the name
Carol has been officially retired from the NOAA listing of annual
storm names. The destruction and loss of life was enormous.
Damage to boats and homes due to the high winds and flooding
was devastating. The erosion from Carol left part of the Wianno
Club’s dining room hanging over the edge of the bluff. With more
advanced warning, many people left Cape Cod to escape the
brunt of the storm. In the end, almost one-third of New England
lost power.
But nothing compares to the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944.
It was a time of crisis in the midst of World War II, and this storm
was the last thing needed on the home front.
The storm made landfall on the Cape at night and winds were
clocked around Cape Cod at over 100 mph. Radios and newspapers
gave early warnings, but they were nothing like the computer
tracking models of today.

When the hurricane hit Cape Cod in September of 1944, it destroyed the
Dowse Mansion once located on the present-day Dowse’s Beach. The main
house was lifted off of the foundation and floated out into East Bay. The
only surviving item from the house — a piano forte — is in the permanent
collection of the Osterville Historical Museum.
The family decided not to rebuild, and
the Town of Barnstable paid $30,000 for
the property and renovations to create a
bathing beach for all town residents.
Over 60 feet of coast was stripped away
from the Wianno Beach and hundreds of
trees were lost in the pine groves along the
boardwalks parallel to the ocean. The major
difference in 1944 was the clean-up crew
consisted of German POWs being held at
nearby Camp Edwards.

took a big hit during the hurricane of 1938.
At that time, the Wianno Club’s bathing
pavilions and piers were destroyed as well.
At very low tides, you can still see the
remnants of those piers destroyed in the
hurricane of 1938.

In September of 1944, the Wianno Club
began the sale of “Hurricane Notes” to pay
for emergency enhancements to protect
the entire Osterville shoreline. The town of
Barnstable pledged to cover 15% of the repair
costs, while the state covered 50% of the bill.
At the Crosby Yacht Building & Storage Co.,
Wilton B. Crosby reported good news to a
few lucky customers whose boats were stored
inside. These boats — including Mrs. Bridge’s
Wianno Senior The Mistral — floated as the
storm surge hit. Despite a 12-foot above
normal flood tide, when the water receded,
“the boats in most cases set upright on their keels.” The only expense? Getting
the boats back to their spaces and blocked up again. Storage costs back then?
$5 per month for a Wianno Senior. A very small price to pay, indeed.
Weather experts say that Cape Cod is long overdue for a direct hit by a major
hurricane.The fear is that the weather patterns of today are very similar to the
1930s-1960s — years that produced devastating storms. With a higher year-round
population and increased building along the coastline, damages could be hefty.
Although these hurricanes have forever changed the Cape Cod coastline and the
landscape, they have not hindered the spirit of those who flock to the seaside
year after year.

The Librarians Tell All
From Duck Soup to Crime & Punishment
Ever wonder what it’s like to keep a library
running smoothly? The best way to find out
is through the eyes of the team that greases
the wheels at the Osterville Village Library
every day. Library staffers Mike Crocker,
John LeRoy, Tory Fiske, Cathy Molle, and
Ethan Pulsifer all responded to our questions.
Bright and early on a typical Saturday morning a woman entrusted a
box of Marx Brothers “Duck Soup” DVDs to the the Reference Librarian,
and said, “For that guy who likes them. You know. Him?” An older man
came in for a tutorial on computer formatting a book manuscript. A
young woman needed help in pulling a college application off the web.
This is downstairs, where Mike Crocker offers technical help, and much
more. No matter what the request, patrons get service with a smile.
Upstairs, it’s more of the same. One librarian is fielding telephone
inquiries about restaurants and lodging, while another checks out
books. Then, a woman comes in seeking clues on locating a long-lost
friend who used to live in the area. A teen inquires about museum
passes. During a lull in the action, we ask our questions.
Most interesting request?
“I think the most amazing thing is the guy who had Mike find and
print him out pictures of a King Eider (bird). He said he was going
to carve it and would bring it back. A month later he came back with
this incredible carving. We put his carving on display in our showcase
and he did a talk about how he got started carving.”
Your quirkiest request?
“The parrot. A guy was looking
for a very rare breed of parrot.
He wanted to know the life-span,
the feasibility of owning on the
Cape, permits, etc., for owning
one. Turns out it was not possible.
I think he got a cat instead.”
How is the library impacted by
the various Village festivals?
“It’s lot busier throughout the day,
especially Village Day and the Fall
Festival. It’s great to see all the
familiar faces getting into the spirit
of things, whether it’s Halloween
or the Christmas Stroll. It shows
how important the library is to the
community as a whole.

As a library staff we are more on our toes these
days, running special programs. We love being
part of these Village events — for example, our
volunteer, Regina Silvia, plays Mrs. Claus every
year during the Christmas Stroll. The little ones’
faces light up when they see her.”

different things. “It’s really beautiful… A lot of
people will come by; I know certain people who

people. I have a certain kid that comes in every
Saturday. He makes sure to stop at my desk
and he talks to me for at least ten minutes about
whatever history thing he’s interested in that week,
and I help him find those books. It’s interesting to see
how integral into people’s daily routines the library is.”
What is your favorite book?
“Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
Don’t dismiss a classic. When you actually get into
it, the book reads like a daytime soap opera, even
like a Mexican telenovela. Try it. You can get a copy
right here.”
What is it that you enjoy most about sitting
behind the front desk?
“Seeing people use the facility in so many ways.
They come to to take out books, magazines, DVDs,
make photocopies. They sit and relax by thumbing
through newspapers and magazines in the fireside
room. They also play cards, the kids play Legos,
and assemble puzzles. The Sandwich couple
who park their boat in a marina up the street,
come in to get cool, and sit beside the gal who
comes in to read the paper because she can’t
afford her own.”

Over the years, Osterville’s library has morphed into the

The Hansen Brothers
Peter and David Hansen are carrying on
their family’s eighty-two year tradition of
business ownership in Osterville. Their
grandfather, who owned the Sunoco
station in Osterville, moved here with
his young family in 1936. Their father
Warren, with his wife Barbara, owned
Hansen Office Supply, which started as
a one-man operation and flourished for
decades, employing as many as 25 to
30 people. Both Peter and David honed
their business skills in the family business
before launching their own enterprises.
Each brother combined his early business
training with his own unique artistic talents
and passions in 1989, when their parents retired.
For Peter, that talent and passion was landscape
design. After a high school summer job at
Lew/Mac Landscaping (Walter Lewis and Philip
Macalister), Peter studied environmental design
at the University of Colorado, plant science at
Stockbridge and the Arnold Arboretum, and
business at the Isenberg Business School at
UMass, where he got his degree.
Peter’s firm, Peter Hansen Design, offers
complete landscape project development
from the initial stage of conception, through
the permitting process to design and construction.
They work with local professionals including engineers, architects, site
contractors, builders, realtors, pool companies, masons, and landscape
contractors to oversee all aspects of the project from start to finish.

Inspired by American landscape
architect Fredrick Law Olmstead,
a Peter Hansen landscape will
stop you in your tracks as you
admire the understated elegance
and the beauty of its New
England simplicity. Peter did
not have to look far for that
inspiration. Olmstead, famously
known for designing the Emerald
Necklace in Boston, also created many private residential landscapes.
Two of these are local — one in Centerville and another on South
County Road in Osterville.
Peter says the trend today in yard landscaping is for pools, fire pits,
and privacy screening, outdoor lighting, and reduced usage of water
and fertilizer.
Also, older homes often need a complete landscape renovation. Some
of the mature shrubs can often be relocated on the property and new
ones brought in to better enhance the architecture of the house.
Whatever the project, his goal is always the same: to protect and enhance
the charm of Osterville’s unique coastal environment.
David, an avid amateur photographer during his college days at the
University of Denver, operated the photo lab at his parents’ business,
where he met other photographers when they came to the photo lab.
One local professional noticed David’s work, and asked him if he would
shoot a wedding. David did the wedding successfully and word-of-
mouth led to more professional opportunities, including working for a
Boston-area financial services company. For years, he traveled with the
company for several weeks each winter, documenting their incentive
trips in tropical destinations like Hawaii, Aruba and Cabo San Lucas.
In Memoriam
Barbara Hansen
We lost our friend, neighbor and the matriarch of the Hansen
family on February 4, 2018. Her contributions as an Osterville
Village Library volunteer and board member were immeasurable. She was
a lifelong member of the Friends group, member of the knitters group,
organizer of the Christmas tea and at the forefront of developing and
managing the Friends Book Store. Her energy and expertise on the board
at a critical time in the library’s history — during the planning and execution
of our current “new” building — were invaluable. But most of all she was
a friend, with boundless energy, and generosity of spirit. She will be missed.

During those years working in the family business and moonlighting
as a photographer, he joined the Professional Photographers of Cape
Cod and New England. He took courses and attended seminars to
perfect his craft.
When his parents retired, David launched Hansen Photography. The
studio focuses on portraiture, including engagements, weddings,
newborns, and multi-generational family portrait albums. One of the
joys of the business for David is getting to know families that he has
photographed annually for as many as 20 years.
In the digital age, training is continuous, as improvements in the
software for editing photos is constant. But perhaps the key to success
for David is, like Peter, that his deep Osterville roots serve him well.
David can offer his clients an insider’s knowledge of the most beautiful
wedding venues and portrait settings the village has to offer. His world-
class studio with a very local focus now includes David’s daughters,
Amy and Katey. Osterville’s fourth generation of Hansens are continuing
a picture perfect family legacy of Osterville entrepeneurship well into
the 21st century.

shop and antiques business out of the little house until moving to Cotuit in 1945. David

paintings of Ralph’s as well as earlier artifacts, including a pre-Revolutionary War cannon,
during their renovations and excavations of the building and property. David will share

Osterville branch of the Red Cross. On November 11, 1918, the
village joined communities all over America in celebrating the
end of the war.
The following, from Osterville historian Paul Chesbro’s book, is
an excerpt from an article published in the Barnstable Patriot on
November 18, 1918:
“Osterville truly has done its share of celebrating the victory of the
great world war the past week. The church bells were rung on Monday
November 11th from 7 o’clock in the morning until 7 at night... The
parade (which) started at 2 pm from Post Office square... was led by
school children dressed in the national colors of the Allies, members
of the Red Cross with the banner and six young ladies in patriotic attire
bore our service flag with its 42 stars, followed by a long line of gaily
decorated autos.”
