correct word for each of the blanks from 41 to 45.
It can be shown in facts and figures that cycling is the cheapest, most convenient, and most
environmentally desirable form of transport (31) towns, but such cold calculations do not mean
much on a frosty winter morning. The real appeal of cycling is that it is so (32) . It has none of the
difficulties and tensions of other ways of travelling so you are more cheerful after a ride, even through the
rush hour.
The first thing a non-cyclist says to you is: "But isn't it (33) dangerous?" It would be foolish to
deny the danger of sharing the road with motor vehicles and it must be admitted that there are an alarming
(34) of accidents involving cyclists. However, although police records (35) that the car
driver is often to blame, the answer lies with the cyclist. It is possible to ride in such a way as to reduce
risks to a minimum.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
For more than six million American children, coming home after school means coming back to an
empty house. Some deal with the situation by watching TV. Some may hide. But all of them have
something in common. They spend part of each day alone. They are called “latchkey children".They are
children who look after themselves while their parents work. And their bad condition has become a
subject of concern. Lynette Long was once the principal of an elementary school. She said, "We had a
school rule against wearing jewellery. A lot of kids had chains around their necks with keys attached. I
was constantly telling them to put the keys inside shirts. There were so many keys; it never came to my
mind what they meant." Slowly, she learned that they were house keys. She and her husband began
talking to the children who had keys. They learned of the effect working couples and single parents were
having on their children. Fear was the biggest problem faced by children at home alone. One in three
latchkey children the Longs talked to reported being frightened. Many had nightmares and were worried
about their own safety. The most common way latchkey children deal with their fears is by hiding. They
may hide in a shower stall, under a bed or in a closet. The second is TV. They often turn the volume up.
It’s hard to get statistics on latchkey children, the Longs have learned. Most parents are slow to admit that
they leave their children alone.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 67 to 76.
Very few people, groups, or governments oppose globalization in its entirety. Instead, critics of
globalization believe aspects of the way globalization operates should be changed. The debate over
globalization is about what the best rules are for governing the global economy so that its advantages can grow
while its problems can be solved.
On one side of this debate are those who stress the benefits of removing barriers to international trade and
investment, allowing capital to be allocated more efficiently and giving consumers greater freedom of choice.
With free-market globalization, investment funds can move unimpeded from the rich countries to the
developing countries. Consumers can benefit from cheaper products because reduced taxes make goods
produced at low cost from faraway places cheaper to buy. Producers of goods gain by selling to a wider
market. More competition keepssellers on their toes and allows ideas and new technology to spread and
benefit others.
On the other side of the debate are critics who see neo-liberal policies as producing greater poverty,
inequality, social conflict, cultural destruction, and environmental damage. They say that the most developed
nations – the United States, Germany, and Japan – succeeded not because of free trade but because of
protectionism and subsidies. They argue that the more recently successful economies of South Korea, Taiwan,
and China all had strong state-led development strategies that did not follow neo- liberalism. These critics think
that government encouragement of “infant industries” – that is, industries that are just beginning to develop –
enables a country to become internationally competitive.
Furthermore, those who criticize the Washington Consensus suggest that the inflow and outflow of money
from speculative investors must be limited to prevent bubbles. These bubbles are characterized by the rapid
inflow of foreign funds that bid up domestic stock markets and property values. When the economy cannot
sustain such expectation, the bubbles burst as investors panic and pull their money out of the country.
Protests by what is called the anti-globalization movement are seldom directed against globalization itself
but rather against abuses that harm the rights of workers and the environment. The question raised by
nongovernmental organizations and protesters at WTO and IMF gatherings is whether globalization will result
in a rise of living standards or a race to the bottom as competition takes the form of lowering living standards
and undermining environmental regulations.
One of the key problems of the 21st
century will be determining to what extent markets should be regulated
to promote fair competition, honest dealing, and fair distribution of public goods on a global scale.

Today, in many parts of the world, it is customary for people to shake hands upon meeting as gesture of good
will. Originally, however, the practice of shaking hands had more practical purpose.
Shaking hands originated in medieval times. In those days, when a man came on a stranger, he would often
automatically reach for his sword with his right hand, in case he had to use the weapon to defend himself.
Sometimes, both parties found themselves circling around each other, weapons in hand, until it was mutually
agreed that the weapons could be laid aside. Then, the two parties extended their right hands to show that they
had no weapons, and clasped them. This was the beginning of the handshake.
The custom of shaking hands is not a universal one. In the Orient, people have, for centuries, clasped their

The concept of obtaining fresh water from iceberg that is towed to populated areas and arid regions of
the world was once treated as a joke more appropriate to cartoons than real life. But now it is being considered
quite seriously by many nations, especially since scientists have warned that the human race will outgrow its
fresh water supply faster than it runs out of food. Glaciers are a possible source of fresh water that has been
overlooked until recently. (A)
Three-quarters of the Earth's fresh water supply is still tied up in glacial ice, a reservoir of untapped fresh
water so immense that it could sustain all the rivers of the world for 1,000 years. Floating on the oceans every
year are 7,659 trillion metric tons of ice encased in 10,000 icebergs that break away from the polar ice caps,
more than ninety percent of them from Antarctica. (B)
Huge glaciers that stretch over the shallow continental shelf give birth to icebergs throughout the year.
Icebergs are not like sea ice, which is formed when the sea itself freezes; rather, they are formed entirely on
land, breaking off when glaciers spread over the sea. As they drift away from the polar region, icebergs
sometimes move mysteriously in a direction opposite to the wind, pulled by subsurface currents. Because they
melt more slowly than smaller pieces of ice, icebergs have been known to drift as far north as 35 degrees south
of the equator in the Atlantic Ocean. (C)
The difficulty arises in other technical matters, such as the prevention of rapid melting in warmer climates
and the funneling of fresh water to shore in great volume. But even if the icebergs lost half of their volume in
towing, the water they could provide would be far cheaper than that produced by desalination, or removing
salt from water. (D)

Telecommuting is a form of computer communication between employees’ homes and offices. For
employees whose jobs involve sitting at a terminal or word processor entering data or typing reports, the
location of the computer is OF NO CONSEQUENCE. If the machine can communicate over telephone
lines, when the work is completed, employees can dial the office computer and transmit the material to their
employers. A recent survey in USA TODAY estimates that there are approximately 8,7 million
telecommuters. But although the numbers are rising annually, the trend does not appear to be as significant
as predicted
when BUSINESS WEEK published “The Portable Executive” as its cover story a few years ago. Why
hasn’t telecommuting become more popular ?
Clearly, change simply takes time. But in addition, there has been active resistance on the part of many
managers. These executives claim that supervising the telecommuters in a large work force scattered across
the country would be too difficult, or, at least, systems for managing THEM are not yet developed, thereby
complicating the manager’s responsibilities.
It is also true that employees who are given the option of telecommuting are reluctant to accept the
opportunity. Most people feel that they need regular interaction with a group, and many are concerned that
they will not have the same consideration for advancement if they are not more visible in the office setting.
Some people feel that even when a space in their homes is set aside as a work area, they never really get
away from the office.
Question 36: How many Americans are involved in telecommuting?
A. More than 8 million. B. More than predicted in Business Week.
C. Fewer than estimated in USA Today. D. Fewer than last year.
Question 37: The phrase “OF NO CONSEQUENCE” means .
A. of no use B. of no good C. unimportant D. irrelevant

C. the lack of interaction with a group D. The work place is in the home
Question 39: The word “ THEM” which is bold and italic refers to .
A. systems B. executives C. responsibilities D. telecommuters
Question 40: The reason why telecommuting has not become popular is that the employees .
A. needn't regular interaction with their families
B. are worried about the promotion if they are not seen at the office
C. like that a work area in their home is away from the office
D. are ignorant of telecommuting
Question 41: It can be inferred from the passage that the author is .
A. a a reporter B. the manager C. a statistician D. telecommuter
Question 42: When BUSINESS WEEK published “ The Portable Executive “, it implied that .
A. systems for managing telecommuters were not effective
B. there was resistance on the part of many managers about telecommuting
C. the trend for telecommuting was optimistic
D. most telecommuters were satisfied with their work

Marianne Moore (1887-1972) once said that her writing could be called poetry only because there was no
other name for it. Indeed her poems appear to be extremely compressed essays that happen to be printed in
jagged lines on the page. Her subjects were varied: animals, laborers, artists, and the craft of poetry. From
1

her general reading came quotations that she found striking or insightful. She included these in her
poems, scrupulously enclosed in quotation marks, and sometimes identified in footnotes. Of this
practice, she wrote, "Why many quotation marks?" I am asked ... When a thing has been so well that it
could not be said better, why paraphrase it? Hence, my writing is, if not a cabinet of fossils, a kind of
collection of flies in amber." Close observation and concentration on detail and the methods of her
poetry.
Marianne Moore grew up in Kirkwood, Missouri, near St. Lois. After graduation from Bryn Mawr
College in 1909, she taught commercial subjects at the Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Later she became a librarian in New York City. During the 1920’s she was editor of The Dial, an
important literary
magazine of the period. She lived quietly all her life, mostly in Brooklyn, New York. She spent a lot
of time at the Bronx Zoo, fascinated by animals. Her admiration of the Brooklyn Dodgers-before the
team moved to Los Angeles-was widely known.
Her first book of poems was published in London in 1921 by a group of friends associated with the
Imagist movement. From that time on her poetry has been read with interest by SUCCEEDING
generations of poets and readers. In 1952 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for her Collected Poems.
She wrote that she did not write poetry for money or fame. To earn a living is needful, but IT can be
done in routine ways. One
writes because one has a burning desire to objectify what it is indispensable to one's happiness to
express.

For more than six million American children, coming home after school means coming back to
an empty house. Some deal with the situation by watching TV. Some may hide. But all of them have
something in common. They spend part of each day alone. They are called “LATCHKEY
CHILDREN”. They are children who look after themselves while their parents work. And their bad
condition has become a subject of concern.
Lynette Long was once the principal of an elementary school. She said, “We had a school rule
against wearing jewelry. A lot of kids had chains around their necks with keys attached. I was
constantly telling them to put the keys inside shirts.
There were so many keys; it never came to my mind what they meant.” Slowly, she learned
that they were house keys. She and her husband began talking to the children who had keys. They
learned of the effect working couples and single parents were having on their children. Fear was the
biggest problem faced by children at home alone. One in three latchkey children the Longs talked to
reported being frightened.
Many had nightmares and were worried about their own safety. The most common way
latchkey children deal with their fears is by hiding. They may hide in a shower stall, under a bed or in

And their bad condition has become a subject of concern. Lynette Long was once the principal of an elementary school. She said, "We had a school rule against wearing jewellery. A lot of kids had chains around their necks with keys attached. I was constantly telling them to put the keys inside shirts. There were so many keys; it never came to my mind what they meant." Slowly, she learned that they were house keys. She and her husband began talking to the children who had keys. They learned of the effect working couples and single parents were having on their children. Fear was the biggest problem faced by children at home alone. One in three latchkey children the Longs talked to reported being frightened. Many had nightmares and were worried about their own safety. The most common way latchkey children deal with their fears is by hiding. They may hide in a shower stall, under a bed or in a closet. The second is TV. They often turn the volume up. It’s hard to get statistics on latchkey children, the Longs have learned. Most parents are slow to admit that they leave their children alone. Very few people, groups, or governments oppose globalization in its entirety. Instead, critics of globalization believe aspects of the way globalization operates should be changed. The debate over globalization is about what the best rules are for governing the global economy so that its advantages can grow while its problems can be solved. On one side of this debate are those who stress the benefits of removing barriers to international trade and investment, allowing capital to be allocated more efficiently and giving consumers greater freedom of choice. With free-market globalization, investment funds can move unimpeded from the rich countries to the developing countries. Consumers can benefit from cheaper products because reduced taxes make goods produced at low cost from faraway places cheaper to buy. Producers of goods gain by selling to a wider market. More competition keepssellers on their toes and allows ideas and new technology to spread and benefit others. On the other side of the debate are critics who see neo-liberal policies as producing greater poverty, inequality, social conflict, cultural destruction, and environmental damage. They say that the most developed nations – the United States, Germany, and Japan – succeeded not because of free trade but because of protectionism and subsidies. They argue that the more recently successful economies of South Korea, Taiwan, and China all had strong state-led development strategies that did not follow neo- liberalism. These critics think that government encouragement of “infant industries” – that is, industries that are just beginning to develop – enables a country to become internationally competitive. Furthermore, those who criticize the Washington Consensus suggest that the inflow and outflow of money from speculative investors must be limited to prevent bubbles. These bubbles are characterized by the rapid inflow of foreign funds that bid up domestic stock markets and property values. When the economy cannot sustain such expectation, the bubbles burst as investors panic and pull their money out of the country. Protests by what is called the anti-globalization movement are seldom directed against globalization itself but rather against abuses that harm the rights of workers and the environment. The question raised by nongovernmental organizations and protesters at WTO and IMF gatherings is whether globalization will result in a rise of living standards or a race to the bottom as competition takes the form of lowering living standards and undermining environmental regulations. One of the key problems of the 21st century will be determining to what extent markets should be regulated to promote fair competition, honest dealing, and fair distribution of public goods on a global scale. From “Globalization” by Tabb, William K., Microsoft ® Student 2009 [DVD] Question 43: It is stated in the passage that . Today, in many parts of the world, it is customary for people to shake hands upon meeting as gesture of good will. Originally, however, the practice of shaking hands had more practical purpose. Shaking hands originated in medieval times. In those days, when a man came on a stranger, he would often automatically reach for his sword with his right hand, in case he had to use the weapon to defend himself. Sometimes, both parties found themselves circling around each other, weapons in hand, until it was mutually agreed that the weapons could be laid aside. Then, the two parties extended their right hands to show that they had no weapons, and clasped them. This was the beginning of the handshake. The custom of shaking hands is not a universal one. In the Orient, people have, for centuries, clasped their own hands in front of them upon meeting to show that they held no weapons. In France, a custom developed in which people who met would kiss each other on both cheeks. The natives of some South Seas islands greet by rubbing noses. Question 10. The concept of obtaining fresh water from iceberg that is towed to populated areas and arid regions of the world was once treated as a joke more appropriate to cartoons than real life. But now it is being considered quite seriously by many nations, especially since scientists have warned that the human race will outgrow its fresh water supply faster than it runs out of food. Glaciers are a possible source of fresh water that has been overlooked until recently. (A) Three-quarters of the Earth's fresh water supply is still tied up in glacial ice, a reservoir of untapped fresh water so immense that it could sustain all the rivers of the world for 1,000 years. Floating on the oceans every year are 7,659 trillion metric tons of ice encased in 10,000 icebergs that break away from the polar ice caps, more than ninety percent of them from Antarctica. (B) Huge glaciers that stretch over the shallow continental shelf give birth to icebergs throughout the year. Icebergs are not like sea ice, which is formed when the sea itself freezes; rather, they are formed entirely on land, breaking off when glaciers spread over the sea. As they drift away from the polar region, icebergs sometimes move mysteriously in a direction opposite to the wind, pulled by subsurface currents. Because they melt more slowly than smaller pieces of ice, icebergs have been known to drift as far north as 35 degrees south of the equator in the Atlantic Ocean. (C) The difficulty arises in other technical matters, such as the prevention of rapid melting in warmer climates and the funneling of fresh water to shore in great volume. But even if the icebergs lost half of their volume in towing, the water they could provide would be far cheaper than that produced by desalination, or removing salt from water. • 16. 9 Telecommuting is a form of computer communication between employees’ homes and offices. For employees whose jobs involve sitting at a terminal or word processor entering data or typing reports, the location of the computer is OF NO CONSEQUENCE. If the machine can communicate over telephone lines, when the work is completed, employees can dial the office computer and transmit the material to their employers. A recent survey in USA TODAY estimates that there are approximately 8,7 million telecommuters. But although the numbers are rising annually, the trend does not appear to be as significant as predicted when BUSINESS WEEK published “The Portable Executive” as its cover story a few years ago. Why hasn’t telecommuting become more popular ? Clearly, change simply takes time. But in addition, there has been active resistance on the part of many managers. These executives claim that supervising the telecommuters in a large work force scattered across the country would be too difficult, or, at least, systems for managing THEM are not yet developed, thereby complicating the manager’s responsibilities. It is also true that employees who are given the option of telecommuting are reluctant to accept the opportunity. Most people feel that they need regular interaction with a group, and many are concerned that they will not have the same consideration for advancement if they are not more visible in the office setting. Some people feel that even when a space in their homes is set aside as a work area, they never really get away from the office. Question 36: How many Americans are involved in telecommuting? A. For more than six million American children, coming home after school means coming back to an empty house. Some deal with the situation by watching TV. Some may hide. But all of them have something in common. They spend part of each day alone. They are called “LATCHKEY CHILDREN”. They are children who look after themselves while their parents work. And their bad condition has become a subject of concern. Lynette Long was once the principal of an elementary school. She said, “We had a school rule against wearing jewelry. A lot of kids had chains around their necks with keys attached. I was constantly telling them to put the keys inside shirts. There were so many keys; it never came to my mind what they meant.” Slowly, she learned that they were house keys. They may hide in a shower stall, under a bed or in
