You must learn how to sell if you want to make $40-$55 an
hour as a tutor. The first key to successful selling is pricing.
What about hourly rates?
You need to check around with the competitors in your
     region to find out what they are charging to stay
 competitive. After checking around, set your hourly rate.
$40-$55 an hour is a premium price for tutoring regardless
                         of locality.
Does the hourly rate fluctuate with the subject being
                       taught?
No, have a fixed hourly rate whether you are tutoring
 kindergarten Spelling or high school Physics. What does
   fluctuate is how much you are going to pay the tutor
based on his or her credentials and the driving distance to
                   the student's home.
What if a customer wants to negotiate rates?
There is very little negotiation in regard to your rates. $5 is
  typically all you should negotiate with a customer if it
           does come down to such a small sum.
How do I set a tutoring session?
The business line rings, and you pick it up."Tutoring
Service, how can I help you?""I have a son who really
       needs help in Algebra," the mom says.
Step # 1: Let the potential customer talk while you listen.
Sympathize with what they say. "I can understand that; a
 lot of students have trouble with Algebra. I had trouble
           with Algebra when I was a kid." I did.
Step #2: Ask them a host of questions. "Well, where does
    your son go to school?" "When did he start having
 problems in math?" "Does he have learning problems?"
    Let them talk. Build camaraderie with the parent.
Step #3: Tell them about how your tutoring service
 works, your tutoring credentials, and go for the close.
"We're a one-to-one, in-home tutoring service. Instead of
you driving to a traditional learning center, I come to you
   on your schedule so you don't have to fight traffic.
Now, I'm taking a look at my schedule, would you like me
          to come out there Sunday from 4-6?"
Step # 4: "Ok, Sunday from 4-6 will be fine" the mom says.
   At the point, the business relationship has initiated.
After every tutoring session, the tutor--or you--should give
   the parent an update on how the session went. This
should either be done through email or phone call-email is
             preferable because it's in writing.
