Royal Palace Museum
The palace museum contains royal religious artifacts and a collection of
prized artwork. There’s also an interesting collection of diplomatic artifacts,
such as paintings, silver and china, which were given as gifts to the
monarchy by the heads of state.
29. Khuangxi Waterfalls
The Waterfall is approximately 30 or 40km
away from Luang Prabang. Khuangxi consists
of several small waterfalls or cascades with
incredibly blue water. You can swim in some
of the basins, all of which are not too deep.
The water is pretty cold, though, but it's a
great experience to swim in the middle of
giant jungle trees.
30. Pak Ou Caves
The famous "Buddha caves" are north of town on the Mekong on a
river boat (around 1.5 hrs). It's also possible to finish the trip at the
'whisky village' where the local Laolao (lao rice spirit) is made. There
are 2 caves - one on the entry level and another - the upper caves -
on top of the hill, a very steep climb but worth the efforts. A candle or
torch is recommended to see the upper cave, as it is dark.
32. Alms Giving
Each morning, hundreds of Buddhist monks line up in their
deep orange robes and walk along the streets to receive alms
from the people of Luang Prabang, who wake up early to
cook the rice and prepare their offerings. This ritual has been a
part of the area’s religious heritage ever since Buddhism was
introduced to Laos in the 14th century - far longer than
modern tourism has existed
Morning Phousi Market
This is the market where the locals go. The market sells almost everything needed in
the daily life, such as, buffalo skin, fishes, chicken, dried food stuff, tea etc
33. Plain of Jars
(8D Explore Mysterious Laos)
Thousands of ancient stone jars lie scattered throughout a plain near
the city of Phonsavan (Laos). Archaeologists believe that the jars were
used 1,500 - 2,000 years ago, by an ancient civilization whose culture is
now totally unknown. Anthropologists and archeologists think that the
jars were funeral urns. The Plain of Jars is littered with UXO (Unexploded
bombs), in particular cluster munitions, the results of massive US
bombardment during the Lao Civil War.
XIENGKHOUANG
34. Vang Vieng
(8D Mysterious Laos)
This small town 160km north of Vientiane via Rte 13 nestles along
a scenic bend in the Nam Song. The town itself is not without
charm, but the main attraction is the karst topography lining the
west hank of the river. Honeycombed with unexplored tunnels
and caverns, the limestone cliffs here are a spelunker's heaven.
Several of the caves are named and play small roles in local
mythology - all are said to be inhabited by spirits.
