ENGL 101 The notes helped me understand the

Online math just doesn't really work for

201610 - Fall

Intro to College
Writing
ENGL 101 When we would have
conferences about our essays
she was very helpful in what we
needed to edit on the essay to
improve our grade for the final
draft.
How in detail she went over the course
material and what was expected of us in
the essay, as well as the group work, so
we could get other perspectives other
than our own.
I felt like the book wasn't needed other
than to look at the format our essays
should be in for our last two essays.
201610 - Fall
2016
Intro to College
Writing
ENGL 101 Caitlin was able to schedule
conferences that worked with my
day. I was able to talk to her after
class most days with issues I
was having in the class.
I liked the free write at the beginning of
each class.
If we could have spent more time on
essay 4, that would have been better. I
know its due to the face everything has
to be done by the end of the semester,
but if we could have spent less time on
essay 1 and 2, I think we could have
used that time with essay 4.
201610 - Fall

Intro to College

ENGL 101 The class was upbeat and an overall
good learning environment. The work

was more motivating

Intro to College

ENGL 101 She was very good at answering
my questions and clarifying her
instructions.
She had great office hours and was very
flexible with them.
I think some of the instructions she was
given need to be more clear, because
she said she had to re read a lot of
things before she understood them and
was trying to fully understand them for
us.

ENGL 101 Every time I had a question the
instructor never had a problem
helping me out. Many a time did I
email her when I was confused
and I always got an answer that
helped me out greatly.
At some points we would listen to music
while we would free write. That would
often help me focus. Every time the
instructor would ask if any of us were
confused she would wait for a few
moments to give us time to think.
I thoroughly enjoyed the class. I have
nothing to comment in this section

ENGL 102 Caitlin understood the time
constraints put on a college
student and how that affected
time management and the
amount of time required to finish
an assignment. She provided
positive encouragement
regarding paper and project
ideas as well as helping narrow
down ambitious topics to
manageable ones.
The creativity required to complete the
material gave more motivation to give
each assignment your all rather than
having to produce draining, novel length
essays on a daily basis.
More examples and references in
constructing each major assignment as
to get a visual representation of what the
instructor wants us to do. More
emphasis on technical writing for those
going into the Maths and Sciences
where creative writing is not as useful.
However, make the presentation of this
topic as well, fun just like the rest of the
class.

ENGL 102 The conferences helped center focus
on the main projects and keep things on
track that might have otherwise gone off

The last assignment as a last
assignment felt lacking. It didn't feel like
you needed to put a lot of time into the
project. While there were many
interesting outcomes from the
assignment there were just as many, if
not more, ones that meet all criteria yet
just seem dry.

The laid-back teaching style was

strong class structure, creating a good

especially appreciated the selection of

The set up of having daily readings
paired with daily journal entries and the
occasional larger-scale essay each
week helped me see improvement in
writing and nonfiction comprehension
over the semester. Interesting topics
and good presentation of a diverse
amount of topics. Workshop and
revision conferences at the end of the
semester allowed for a more focused
view on each student, both in the
classroom and the professor's office
hours.
The only thing I can think about is having

more throughout the semester.

ENGL 293 The exercises were all helpful and
pushed my writing forward.
I think there's way too much reading in
this course. I agree with Caitlin that good
writing is informed by reading, but when
two or three essays were assigned per
class, I always felt like I had to burn
through them in order to stay caught up,
and this made it hard to try and really
dive into the craft of the assigned
reading. I felt like I often came away
from the reading understanding what
was being written about, but struggling to
understand how it was written. I think
reading just one essay per class would
be far more helpful in terms of looking at
craft, and the class could still cover a
large amount of writing.

Beginning Nonfiction

ENGL 293 Hill scheduled conferences
outside of class to talk about one
of our projects we worked on. I
find one on one conferences with
teachers to be really helpful while
in the middle of working on a
project to see exactly what they
want to be accomplished in an
assignment and to get new ideas
for them.
In Hill's class we would be assigned two
or three readings almost every class
period and we would discuss them in the
following class. I found this activity very
helpful in my learning because it showed
me different tools that accomplished
writers use in their work and allowed me
to try these techniques in my own
writing.
Hill's nonfiction class was very
enjoyable. The only aspect that I think
could use improvement is the rules for
workshop which I don't think were bad
they just needed to be better used
during class time.

ENGL 293 The instructor was very kind and
worked with her students on both
a both professional and personal
level to ensure we all felt
comfortable with our

The class allowed for an open mind
approach with no judgement from the
instructor or the students. There was no
right or wrong answer to how writing
should be done. Only simple guidelines
to help direct the students.
More class time as several of the topics
discussed were simply too much
information to cover in such a short time.
