The document summarizes ways in which the media piece challenges conventions of real thrillers. It notes that limitations in technology resulted in less sharp shots compared to films like Seven and Jaws. It discusses using dramatic music building tension like in Jaws, and hinting at clues that become important later on, as seen in Seven. It also mentions making the opening character vulnerable to fit thriller conventions, with the goal of surprising audiences later with a plot twist.
1. What Ways Does My Media Use, Develop Or Challenge Forms And Conventions Of Real Media Products?
2. Looking back at other thrillers Ihad analysed, like Seven and Jaws our thriller was a little dull as we didn’t have the same technology- as a result we didn’t get the same sharpness and precision in our shots. Also our camera angles were plain and simple as we mainly used pan, wide shot and zoom. However our thriller had many similarities to other thrillers. For example the use of dramatic music, like Jaws, our music slowly build up in volume and pace creating the tension and suspense.
3. We got our inspiration when watching 7, we liked the way it hinted at clues that later on in the film became vital, this was one of the codes we really focused on achieving. I felt our opening was successful as we met the codes and conversions, for example we used a vulnerable character, faults leads and lots of suspense. However Overall it could of been greatly improved with an extra filming session. We found it difficult to fit in all the shot so therefore the quality isn't as good as we hoped. The editing could also of been improved as we lost time when capturing our opening as we took to long. When choosing our narrative we looked closely at our audience research. We decided to let the audience guess the plot line and not make it clear to them what is happening. we used a non- linear narrative so we could include flash backs.
4. In the opening, like most thrillers we made the woman character very vulnerable to fit in with some of the typical codes and conventions. We made her seem like a victim to the audience, however later on in the film there is a twist. When casting our role, we took into consideration the age and height as we wanted our character to be around 18, this was to make it more relevant to our chosen target audience so they could emphasise.
