3. WHAT IS THE PRINTER
• An external hardware device responsible for taking computer data
and generating a hard copy of that data.
• Printers are one of the most commonly used peripherals and they
print text and still images on the paper.
•The printer is computer output device that accepts text and graphic as
input, and prints or illustrations on paper as a hard copy in the form of
documents
.
4. TYPES OF PRINTER
• Printers can fall into two categories
- Impact printer
It produces text and images when tiny wire pins on print
head strike the ink ribbon by physically contacting the paper
Ex- Dot matrix printer, line printer, daisy wheel printer, band
printer
- Non-impact printer
It produces text and graphics on paper without
actually striking the paper
Ex- inkjet printer, laser printer, Thermal printer
5. Impact printer
• An impact printer creates an image by using pins or hammers to press
an inked ribbon against the paper
• Simplest impact printer is a type writer which user small hammers
embossed with characters or shapes
Dot matrix printer
• Dot matrix printers are commonly used in workplaces where physical
impact with paper is important.
• A dot matrix printer creates an image by using a mechanism called a
print head, which contains a cluster or Metrix of short pins
• The more pins that a print heard contains, the higher the resolution
of the printer’s resolution
Application of dot matrix printers
-print letters
-Printer documents
-print article
-printing reports
-Reduced noise level
6. Advantages and Disadvantages
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• Dirty and noisy environments
do not affect the printer
• Are very noisy and so unsuitable
for most office environment
• Produces carbon copies • Are now more expensive than
inlet printers
• running costs are low • Are most slowest type printers
7. Line printers
• A line printer is a special type of impact printer.
• IT uses a special wide print head that can print an entire line of text at
once.
• Line printers have low resolution but are incredibly fast.
• It can print 3000 lines of text per minute.
Application of line printers
- Produce invoices
- Bank statements
- Product shipment
-Transportation documentation
Advantages and Disadvantages
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• A high-speed printer capable of
printing an entire line at one time.
•Line printer cannot print graphics
• A fast line printer can print as
many as 3,000 lines per minute.
• print quality is low, and they are
very noisy.
8. Daisy wheel printer
• Daisy wheel printing is an impact printing technology invented in
1970 by Andrew Gabor at Diablo Data Systems. It uses interchangeable
pre-formed type elements, each with typically 96 glyphs, to generate
high-quality output comparable to premium typewriters such as
the IBM Electric, but two to three times faster
•. Daisy wheel printing was used in electronic typewriters, word
processors and computers from 1972. The daisy wheel is so named
because of its resemblance to the daisy flower.
Application of daisy wheel printer
-Electronic typewriters
-Word processors
Advantages and Disadvantages
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• More reliable than DMP
printer
• slower than DMP
• better quality • Noisy
• The font of character can be
easily changed
• More expensive than DMP
9. Band printer
• A band printer features a rotating band embossed with alphanumeric
characters
• To print a character, the machine rotates the band to the desired
character, then a small hammer taps the band, pressing the character
against a ribbon
• Band printer can print 200 lines of text per minute
Advantages and Disadvantages
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• The speed of printer is high • It is noisy
• Character font can easily be
changed
•Print quality is low
10. Non-impact printer
• Non-impact printers use other means to create an image
• For example inkjet printers spray on the paper to create an image on
the paper
Inkjet printers
• Inkjet printers create an image directly on the paper by spraying ink
through tiny nozzles
• Ink jet printers are cheapest non-impact printers
• Color ink jet printers have 4 ink nozzles i-e Cyan(blue), Magenta(red),
yellow and Black
•The colors are sometimes referred as CMYK
Application of inkjet printer
-Printing electronic devices such as circuit boards
-Solar cells
-Delivering accurate amount of drugs in pharmaceutical industry.
11. Advantages and Disadvantages
ADVATAGES DISADVANTAGES
• Produce high quality output • Slow to print more than one page
• Fast for printing one-page
documents
• more expensive to run because
inject cartridges do not last as
longer as toner cartridges
•Easier to move than other printers • First page can be slow to print
12. Laser printer
• Laser printers are more expensive than inkjet printers, their print
quality is higher
• A CPU and memory is built into the printers to interpret the data and
control the laser
• The quality and speed or laser printers make then for office
environment
• Single color (Black) laser printers typically can produce between 4 and
16 pages of text a minute
• The most common laser printers have resolution of 300 or 600 dpi,
both horizontally and vertically
• Some high-end models have resolution of 1200 or1800 dpi
Application of laser printer
- Printing of reports
- Letters
- Desktop publishing
13. Advantages and Disadvantages
ADVANTAGES DISVANTAGES
• Fast output is achieved • Limited in the paper size that
they can take
• Large printers jobs can be carried
out quickly
• Initial costs are high as they are
expensive
• Toner cartridges last much longer
than inkjet cartridges
• First page can be slow to print
14. Thermal printer
• A thermal printer is a printer that makes use of heat in order to
produce the image on paper.
• Due to quality of print, speed, and technological advances it has
become increasingly popular and is mostly used in airline, banking,
entertainment, retail, grocery, and healthcare industries. Thermal
printing does not make use of ink or toner unlike many other printing
forms but largely depends on thermal papers for producing the images.
They are also quiet popular in creating labels owing to speed of
printing.
Application of thermal printer
- Information kiosks
- Point of sale systems
- Voucher printers in slot machines
- Print on demand labels for shipping and products
- For recording live rhythm strips on hospital cardiac monitors
15. Advantages and Disadvantages
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• Easier to use as there are less
buttons and use of software
involved.
• Unlike standard printers, thermal
printers usually do not print out
colors well.
• Popular in noise-free
environments and are great for
offices.
• If they become too heated to
operate, the ink consumed would
be more and the printing may not
be precise.
• Largely inexpensive and come in
various models and sizes.
• Pinhead could be harmed by the
high heat used while printing,
often resulting on cost to repair
when it break down.
16. Other printers
High quality printers
•These printers are often used by publishers and small print shops to
create high quality output, especially color output
Photo printers
• A photo printer is usually an inkjet printer, although it can be a
thermal dye printer, which has the ability to print high-quality digital
photos and other vibrant color projects. The appeal of being able to
print pictures instantly, along with the drop in digital camera prices, has
enticed many people to purchase a photo printer. Prior to that, these
types of printers were larger, more expensive and generally used only
by professionals.
17. Plotters
• A plotter is a type of printer that prints vector graphics. It is a piece of
computer gear that converts computer commands into paper line
drawings. It draws a line with one or more automatic pens
• Unlike a traditional printer, a plotter uses a pen, marker, pencil, or
other writing tools to draw multiple rather than toner. It may also use
vector graphics files or commands to draw continuous point-to-point
lines.
• Though it was previously widely used for computer-aided design, it is
now only used to print hard copies of schematics and other comparable
application.
Type of plotters
- Drum Plotters
- Flatbed plotters
- Cutting Plotters
- Inkjet Plotter
Applications of Plotters
-Draw charts - Banners and billboards
-Computer-aided designs - Building plans
-Architectural Blueprints - Line art
-Textile Printing - Geographical layouts
18. Advantages and Disadvantages
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGE
• Plotters can work on very large
sheets of paper while keeping good
resolution.
• As compared to traditional
printer plotters are very large in
size
• In addition to printing on paper,
they can print on a wide variety of
flat materials such as plastic,
cardboard, aluminum, plywood,
and sheet steel.
• Also, they are much costly as
compared to a regular printer.
• Furthermore, without any image
degradation, plotters can draw the
same pattern thousands of times.
•Initial costs are high as be slow to
print
19. LATEST TECHNOLOGIES FOR PRINTERS
• In the past decade or so, the printing world has gone through a
tremendous transformation. The process of printing has been
completely revolutionized and eased the whole experience for the
users. One of the major concerns of printer owners all over the world
are the cost-effective printers, that are capable of generating high-
quality prints.
• We are going to have a look at few of the latest printing industry
trends, that you should look forward to in the coming years.
3D Printing Will Penetrate into Different
Sectors
• One of the latest and emerging digital printing trends in the market
that is running successfully. By making use of the additive
manufacturing process or 3D printing, we can produce three-
dimensional objects. The 3D printing technology has a pivotal role to
play in various industries. industry trend. However, be it the
manufacturing or even medical, there are quite a few industries, where
3D printing can penetrate into.
20. Sheet Fed Digital Printing
• A relatively new concept in the printing industry and is quite a few
new systems that have already hit the shelve. Some of the renowned
vendors such as Konica, Screen, HP, Minolta, Fujifilm have already
adopted this printing industry trend. The commercial printing
companies would be benefited by this sheet fed digital printing as they
would have the ability to print close to B2 (707 X 500 MM) sheets. This
would completely transform the way in which companies go about
their printing business. However, the cost of digital printing is going
down and the format sizes are expanding.
21. Erasable Printing Technology
• Japanese multinational Toshiba, demonstrated the first prototype of
the erasable printing technology. All the contents that are showcased
on a piece of paper are automatically erased with this technology. This
whole concept of erasable technology was taken from the technology
that was proposed for pilot pens. A revolutionary technology, where
users do not have to worry about the incorrect printing material. You
just have to put it back into the printer and the content will be erased.
22. Security Printing
•This is one of the common needs of every organization in the printing
industry. Without having a stringent security system, no firm or
organization can function. In this respect, a lot of stern and dramatic
changes have been made. It has become vital to implement some hard
steps, in order to enhance the security, due to the increased number of
threats. Advanced substrates, 2D bar coding, biometrics, unique links
are some of the recent advances that are being made in security
printing.
