The case study I chose to explore was Carl and the theory I
chose was Ecological Perspective. When analyzing Carl’s
case many different challenges are present. First, challenge
would loss of job and income. The case study does not state on
how long he worked there or if he enjoyed the work he did. I
would believe that would be hard for him to no longer provide
financial for his family. Second challenge would be the death of
his wife. He was married for 19 years and she handled the day
to day process of the home. With these two life changing events
obviously brought different forms of stress on Carl. Case notes
do describe that he has reached out to local community members
to help with the assistance of the children, he has reached out to
his church for emotional support, his local doctor for
medication and therapist to help work thru his emotional stress.
Carl has also started journaling which will assist him in
processing his emotions and helping him achieve his goal of
pre-crisis functioning.
In examining Carl’s case, many social systems are used.
5. Community members, church, family and physicians. These
social systems relate to each other by the factor that they are all
assisting to help Carl and his family. These systems are driven
to helpful and give that sense of community and provide
resources to other members in the community that need help.
Ecological Perspective can be applied to Carl as “Ecosystems
theory focuses on transactions between people and their
environments. Thus, the ecological notion of interface, or
common boundaries between systems, is an important
component of this theory. Interface, according to Germain
(1978, p. 545), “takes into account the fluidity in the arena
of social functioning in which both the person and environment
are involved.†“Goodness of fit†between people and their
environments enables people and their environments to
reciprocally adapt to one another†(Robbins, Chatterjee, &
Canda, 2012, pg.33). We see in his case that his environment
can affect him negativity or positivity. Examples would be
family members helping with child care to physicians
prescribing medication. Once he reached out for help, he started
achieving goals and living a healthier life.

An explanation of the various social systems involved in
the case study you selected
During this week discussion question, I chose the case of Noah.
Noah is a 10 year old multiracial male that has been displaying
destructive and aggressive behaviors which has caused him
issues with residing with his family (Plummer, Makris, &
Brocksen, 2014). Currently, Noah has been placed into Foster
Care due to his behavioral issues and his mother not being
consistent with his medical appointments (Plummer, Makris, &
Brocksen, 2014). When you think about social systems, you
think about people and/or organizations that interacts with other
parties on behalf of someone to accomplish a positive outcome
for that person ( Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012). In this
case, Noah had his family, social services, mental health
services, foster family, and child protective services. All of
these systems worked together to provided Noah with the help
he needed and finding justifications and solutions to his
behaviors such as mental health diagnoses and treatment.
Explain how these social systems might relate to one another
All of the systems relate to one another, because all of the
above systems are put into place to protect and assist the child
which is Noah. These systems are also related because they are
recognized as “boundaries of larger social systems” (Robbins,
Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012, pg. 39). Social services, mental
health services, foster care services, and child protective
services are all related because they work together to
understand the client problem areas, identify the client needs,
and provide the client with the helped needed to promote the
well-being of the client. All of these systems then interact with
the family to obtain valuable information about the client,
provide the family with resources, and other assistance needed
so that a child such as Noah could be placed back into the home
and be successful.
7. Describe the systems theory you selected and explain how you
might apply it to that case study using specific social work
skills.
With the case of Noah, I believe that the Dynamic Systems of
Theory might apply to this case. The dynamic systems of theory
look at the biology, psychology, and sociology areas to explain
behaviors and the functions of behaviors (Robbins, Chatterjee,
& Canda, 2012). The dynamic system of theory can be applied
to this case because it looks at how the family may influence
other family members, how families develop “patterns and
developmental processes”, and how the families work with other
agencies such as social services etc. (Robbins, Chatterjee, &
Canda, 2012, pg. 35). This can be applied in the social work
practice by gathering information about the family dynamics
and behaviors through assessments. Along with that, this theory
could be applied by linking the client to other social service
services that will benefit the client well-being and his or her
family.

Confidentiality is highly important in the social work field. It is
the Federal Law that when a client discloses information it is to
stay between the staff member and the client, unless what was
disclosed was going to be harming to the client, then you report
it to your boss and take further legal steps. With confidentiality
being under the federal law clients information can only be
disclosed if ordered by the courts, a client gave consent and
waived he/she rights. If any of those matters are not being take
into action the clients information is not to be disclosed with
anyone.
While in undergrad when did a lot of role-playing, my professor
gave the scenario of a staff member meeting with the wife of a
client whom in which the husband previously shared he had
HIV. Now in most cases your humanly insistent would be to
share that information with the wife, however as the social
worker it is not your place to disclose that information to the
wife. It is up to the client to share that information and you be a
source of support rather it be at that present time or at a later
date.
Mandated reporting is very important. With my current job as a
family worker we are certified mandated reports and it is our
duties to report situations no matter how small it is. We file
10. reports when the children are hurt, and/or sick, if they come in
with marks. Nonetheless, if the parents share information of
Domestic violence in the home that the child may have been
exposed too. Reporting such actions keeps all lines of
communications open with the client and the social worker.
Mandated reporters client information also is disclosed unless
ordered by the courts, or given consent by the client.

Confidentiality can be something that we think we have under
control but can easily be broken without even knowing it. I find
confidentiality hard some times in my position as a mental
health Case Manager in a small town where everyone knows
who you are and your career. In my position it is important to
let the client know that everything they say to me is
confidential and that I have no right to release information
unless they consent. As social workers we must follow the code
of ethics and that includes the dignity and worth of a person
(NASW, 2008). I find this hard because I can be out in public
and see a client and I am not allowed to acknowledge them
unless they acknowledge first, giving me permission to
associate with them. My agency also forbids us to put where we
work on our Facebook or social media due to help with
11. confidentiality.
Building a trustworthy relationship with out clients is our main
goal as social workers and if they do not feel that trust then the
relationship might not work as planned. Social workers
encounter this issue a lot with confidentiality as we work daily
with other agencies in the field (Reamer, 2011). Mandated
reporting must also be included in this as we as social workers
are mandated reporters. We must break that confidentiality if
someone's life is in danger either through abuse or suicidal
ideation. For our clients this could help them when they feel
they are not strong enough to speak out for themselves or for
those who cannot speak, social workers can give them a voice.
I am proud of the agency I work for and it's goal to keep
confidentiality. When I call someone or leave a message I am
not even allowed to say the agency I work for as it can break
confidentiality. It is little things like these that helps build the
relationship but can also be easy to forget. I feel that the longer
a person practices confidentiality the better they become at it.

For social workers, services to clients should be solely based on
the professional provision of services. This should be done in
the context of a professional relationship. For the client’s
protection, this is handled by use of a signed informed consent
document, Daly & Hickman (2011). Informed consent is an
ethical responsibility that the social worker is charged with,
National Association of Social Workers (2008).
Informed consent provides the client with knowledge regarding
potential risks, consequences, and benefits of the proposed
treatment Daly & Hickman (2011). Along with this, the client
is also informed of their right to either refuse or withdraw their
consent. Where there are circumstances that finds the client is
unable to provide informed consent, the social worker will seek
out a third party to act on their behalf. The social worker will
act responsibility to ensure the third party acts in the client’s
best interests, National Association of Social Workers (2008).

For this scenario I would have to try to talk to the boy and let
him know that there is a two week wait to be seen. Due to there
not being an emergency at this time and no suicidal ideation I
feel that he would be safe to wait a couple weeks. I would not
even have to let him know who I am if he could not tell from
my voice. I would then make him an appointment to see my co-
worker in two weeks for an assessment. I would give him ways
to manage his depression until then, for example coping skills,
trying to keep a sleep schedule, eat healthy and exercise. I
would also refer him to his primary care doctor to talk to for
medication options before his appointment if needed. Dual
relationships give a risk to the social worker in not following
the code of ethics (Daley & Hickman, 2011). I have had this
issue multiple times as I currently work in a Mental Health
agency for a small community in which I have lived my whole
life. Every day I see someone I know or have seen around at my
agency. I cannot talk to them or let any of my family or friends
know I see them there. When I become a therapist here I will
refuse to see people I know due to this reason, it would be
uncomfortable and risk the outcome of treatment. I have had my
best friend's father come in for an assessment, instead of me
doing his screen sheet I asked someone else to do it so that he
was not uncomfortable.
If for some reason I had to work as a social worker with
someone I knew personally I would reassure them that I have to
15. remain confidential and not disclose anything they say to
anyone. I would stress to them that I am trained to do this and
that I would try my best to help them. As a social worker in a
small community it is important to blend into the community
and not try to act as if I were superior to others due to my
position (Daley & Hickman, 2011). This will help to gain trust
to those in the community as they may have to work with me
one on one. There are arguments that a person knowing their
social worker personally may help in building that bond and
trust that helps that therapeutic bond (Zur & Lazarus, n.d.). In
my opinion and my personal experience dual relationships
should be avoided at all times.
