China’s total seed market value reached USD 8.32 billion in 2009, compared with USD 2.42
billion in 2001, with CAGR of 16.69% from 2001 to 2009. Foreign investment has infused
profusely in China’s seed market due to huge market opportunity and great business potential.
So far, more than 70 oversea seed producers have set foot in China and some of them even
dominated seed market in part. Their competitive advantages lie in highly added value
vegetable seeds and flower seeds. There is intense competition among Mosanto,
Dupont/Pioneer and Syngenta.
Compared with foreign opponents, insufficient fund and support in R&D sector have lower
competitiveness of some domestic seed enterprises, which mostly are of small and medium
size, however, change is under way. In 2010, Chinese seed industry has entered a new phase
of development. Central government had released an important document concerning the
promotion of M&A relating to seed companies in January 2010. During the same period, some
Chinese companies had offered IPOs, such as Beijing Dabeinong and Winall Hi-tech Seed,
which is an indication of further business expansion. In September 2010, Bayer CropScience
and Chinese Oil Crops Research Institute (OCRI), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science
(CAAS) reached an agreement on rapeseed research, another symptom of closer cooperation
in the time of a promising seed market. Thus, keeping track of rapid changes on China seed
market is of great value and necessary.
