resources and technology.
Last year, Swedish teamed up with Premera and the March of Dimes to start
425.482.2569.Fax
the new Family Support Program for parents with newborns in Swedish’s
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Designed to provide enhanced

information and comfort to families of premature and other critically ill
babies, the three-year program is the first of its kind in the state.
Swedish also celebrated the grand opening of a new family center for
parents with babies in the NICU and Infant Special Care Unit. The
center was made possible thanks to those who contributed to the Fund-
a-Need portion of Celebrate Swedish 2004. Donors also made it possible
for the Swedish Medical Center Foundation to provide $2.2 million to
expand the NICU.
Swedish operates the most active childbirth program in Washington
state, delivering more than 7,200 babies last year. The vast majority of
those pregnancies and births go smoothly as it did for mom Noura and
baby George (opposite page). But when something unexpected
does happen, Swedish has experts, like Susan Hasty, R.N., Terrence
J. Sweeney, M.D., and Dyan Simon, M.D. (above right), standing
by to respond to any complication.
“I will remember that warmth, sympathy and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug.”

As I’ve gotten older - and shorter - I decided to try
Pilates because I heard that adding height was one of
the benefits. I’ve been working with Katie and she is
amazing. I’m not the best at sticking with any exercise,
but this is something I hate to miss. My core is stronger,
shoulders that were hurting are now mobile and pain
free. Best of all - I gained half an inch back! The atmo-

are the best at what they do. I highly recommend Pilates
