Our thought patterns can vary each day depending on the "tunes" or thought patterns playing in our mind, which are like random songs selected from an iTunes playlist. These tunes of "I" shape how we see ourselves and what we think, such as thinking "I'm stupid" or "I know everything". However, all these tunes come from the same source - an open intelligence. When we realize this, the tunes we identify with lose their power over us. The present moment is all we have, so we should allow things to be as they are now and find clarity, instead of worrying about the past or future.

1. THE MANY TUNES OF “I”
We wake up in the morning and some days it may be a happy thought
pattern, but other days it may be an unhappy thought pattern—it just
depends on what tunes are playing that day. It’s like having random
compilations on an iPod, where we don’t know what we’re going to hear
next. The iTunes play according to our particular version of “I”! Our
particular tunes of “I” constantly appear as if in a random play list, and that
play list may go on and on for as long as we live.
We each have our own particular tunes. For one person it might be, “I’m
stupid; I can’t do anything.” For another it might be, “Shut up and listen to
me; I know what I am talking about.” Whatever these tunes may be, they all
have exactly the same basis. Whether we think we are the dullest person on
earth or the brightest, or whether we think we’re the craziest or the sanest,
or whether we think we’re the richest or the poorest, it is all situated in the
same source.
When we begin to realize that open intelligence is the source of all those
thoughts, then all the tunes that are playing aren’t so compelling. We don’t
start singing along with every tune that comes up. Instead, we are enjoying
stable open intelligence and the clarity therein.
We don’t have more than this moment. If we allow everything to be ​as it is
in this moment, then everything is spacious and open, and we will know
what to do when the next tune comes along. We don’t have to spend this
moment worrying about the next moment or plummeting into past moments
to try to make sense of them. The only way we are going to make sense of
our past tunes or our future tunes is in the restfulness of right now.
