SLP: Third Part
As long as there are people in a setting, there will be conflict. There are many types and many solutions. The most important point about conflict is that if it goes unresolved, it will impact the success of an organization or program. Using information from the module readings and your interviewee as well as from your own research, please respond to the following questions.
1) Describe some of the conflicts that the program has experienced. (Were there more at the program's inception or at some other stage of the program?)
2) Identify what type of conflict this is.
3) Discuss the impact of this conflict on the program's effectiveness. (Were there any negative patient outcomes?)
4) Describe the steps that were taken to end the conflict.
5) What was the end result - was it resolved? If not, what has happened to those in the program who were involved in the conflict?
Assignment Expectations:
1. Be sure to conduct additional research to gather sufficient information to familiarize yourself with the facts of the case and be sure to justify/support your position.
2. Limit your responses to a maximum of three pages.
3. Please support your discussions with scholarly support (3-5 references). Be sure to properly cite all references.
4. Apply critical thinking skills the the assignment component.
5. I will grade your paper on your ability to address the assignment criteria listed above with depth and breadth of discussion. I will also critique your writing format (i.e. proper reference citations, spacing, etc.).
Your case paper will be further evaluated based on the following criteria:
Precision (Excellent; Good; Average; Poor)
· Each question and or assignment requirement is addressed in the paper
· Accuracy of your answers, key points and supporting discussion
Clarity (Excellent; Good; Average; Poor)
· The paper is well organized, concise, reads clearly, and it is not confusing.
Breadth (Excellent; Good; Average; Poor)
· The paper presents appropriate breadth covering the assignment questions/requirements

Additional considerations to keep in mind while working on
your case assignments:
Originality and Use of directly quoted material
· The purpose of each assignment is for you to present your
understanding and synthesis of the background material and key
concepts. Accordingly, this must be accomplished substantially
in your own words.
· Use directly quoted material sparingly and only when
preserving the exact words of an author is necessary. For
purposes of this course, rarely should directly quoted material
3. represent more than 5-10 percent of your entire case paper’s
content. Composing a paper patched together from mostly
quoted material is not acceptable.
· Be sure to properly reference all directly quoted material and
include the in-text citations. All paraphrased information also
requires reference citations at the end of the paraphrased
section.
Grades
· A paper that answers all assignments questions and supports
the same with good key points, well supported discussions and
quality references will earn a solid “B” grade.
· Please remember that “A” papers are exceptional works that
go beyond just answering the questions and provide insightful
answers.
Please be sure to provide at least 3 citations of sources
consulted in preparing your paper in the body of the actual
document itself (i.e., in addition to furnishing a reference list).
Remember, any statement that you make that is not common
knowledge or that originates from your synthesis or
interpretation of materials you have read must have a citation
associated with it. For guidelines on in-text citations, visit the

The Case Assignment
Bobby Langdon is the current president of Acme General. It is a
300-bed hospital serving a community of 70,000 people. He has
just completed a meeting with the hospital administrator, Susy
Miller. The meeting was called to address to find an acceptable
solution to an apparant conflict between Ms. Miller and the
chief of the Bariatric Program, Dr. Kincaid. The problem: The
Bariatic Program manager is scheduling the various surgeries in
such a way that the providers do not feel they can adequately
perform these complicated procedures. They also feel there isn't
proper time allowed between procedures to set up the surgical
4. suite for the next case. The providers feel that the
scheduling issues are resulting in poor patient outcomes. It has
also been pointed out that the program manager shows
favoritism toward some of the providers and allows them more
time in the OR and between cases. The problem escalated when
Dr. Kincaid fired the program manager after numerous
complaints from providers, staff, and patients. The manager
talked to Ms. Miller who over-ruled the doctor. She cited that
non-clinical staff could not be fired by the program director.
After reading this scenario, use the information you have
gleaned from your research and the required readings to answer
the following questions.
1) Identify and discuss at least 3 types of conflict found in a
healthcare setting.
2) What type of conflict is represented in this scenario? (Justify
your response.)
2) What is the potential impact on the Bariatric Program and the
organization? (Discuss at least three)
3) What are some potential solutions? Which one is the best
considering all the facts that have been presented?
4) What will likely be the reaction of Ms. Miller, Dr. Kincaid,
and the program manager when a resolution is decided?
