3. Recent studies found
that certain dyes can
lead to an increased risk
of bladder cancer
(Turesky 2).
Overuse of hair
dye can also
damage hair and
cause it to
become brittle.

4. Temporary Hair Dye
Temporary
hair dyes
work by
coating the
hair strands
and are easily
removed.
(Fruen 1)
These dyes
contain
peroxide in
small amounts
and no
ammonia, so
the hair’s
natural color
will return.

5. Semi-Permanent
Hair Dye
They have “small
molecules that
penetrate the hair
shaft” (Fruen 1)
These dyes will take
longer to fade out.

6. Permanent Hair Dye
There is a 2 step
process:
First, hydrogen
peroxide is used to
remove the hair
pigments.
(Helmenstine 1)
Then p-aminophenol
or chemicals like it
soak into the hair
shafts to give it a new
color (Fruen 1)

7. Permanent Hair Dye cont.
“Ammonia is
the alkaline
chemical that
opens the cuticle
and…peroxide is
used as the
developer or
oxidizing agent”
(Helmenstine 1)
The peroxide
breaks the
chemical bonds
to let the
coloring take
effect.
