Introduction
• In terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act
(MHSA), the mining sector has an obligation
to supply quality drinking water to all its
employees.
• This act also requires that the water is readily
accessible, and consistently available.
• Mine Health and Safety Act makes reference
to compliance with any other standard of
which “SANS: 241” is more relevant in the
case of water quality.
• Since the service water, that is readily
available at most mines does not comply with
the requirements for drinking water as
described in SANS: 241, a decision needs to
be made to install systems that can provide
adequate drinking water which complies with
the required standards at all working places.

Background
Due to the scattered and temporary nature of the
working places in the South African underground
mining industry, it was decided by Germ Africa
to design an unit that can easily be removed and
transported to a new working place.
In a combined effort, Trackless Support Services
CC and Germ Africa (PTY) Ltd developed and
built a prototype, called the Umgodi Manzi Water
System for evaluation.
• The prototype was installed at Sibanye Gold Driefontein.
• A series of tests were conducted
• The results were evaluated according to the standards set
out by the “Potable Water Quality Management Standard”
for Sibanye.

Description
The Umgodi Manzi Water System was
developed with the aim of adhering to the
following specifications:
• Deliver drinking water that complies with
SANS:241.
• User friendly and robust system.
• Compact and easy to handle and transport.
• No electricity or other power source required.
• Cost effective.
The compact Umgodi Manzi filtration system consists of
a water inlet port, pressure stabilisation, the filtration
system, storage tank(s) and tap(s) contained in a portable
enclosure has of four handles to ensure that four people
can carry the unit with ease.

Testing
The following test were carried out:
• Umgodi Manzi was installed at 7#,
Sibanye Gold.
• Water samples were taken from the
service water supply as well as from the
Umgodi Manzi System. These were
marked with date, time, location,
service/Umgodi Manzi Water System and
temperature.
• One sample was sent for a full analysis.
• Other samples were sent for uranium,
salinity, pH and turbidity analysis.
• A sample was sent bi-weekly for E-coli
and Agar Plate count.
