The sun provides energy to plants through photosynthesis. Primary consumers like mice obtain about 10% of the energy by eating plants, and secondary consumers like owls obtain around 5% of the energy by preying on primary consumers, with the rest of the energy lost or transferred through the food chain. Upon death, secondary consumers decompose into fungi which continue the nutrient cycle.
