Fractions
A fraction is a number that
names an equal part of a
          whole.
Vocabulary
• fraction (fracción)
• numerator (numerador)
• denominator (denominador)
• equivalent fraction
 (fracción equivalente)
The numerator is the
number above the bar in a
fraction. It tells how many of
the equal parts of the whole
or group are being
considered.

                     3 three-fourths

                     4 The denominator is the
number below the bar in a
                                  fraction. It tells the total
                                  number of equal parts.

What is the denominator in these fractions?
Jose has three pencils. He
                    sharpened one pencil. What
                    fraction represents the sharpened
                    part of the group?

How many are in the whole or group? (denominator)

                              1
                              3
