Music Quiz Prelims (Oasis 2017)
- 10. 7.
A collaborative project by two of the most popular hip hop artists of all time, X and Y, Z
was recorded in 2009 during which both X and Y were ruling the charts. Due to legal
troubles, it was delayed, and it was presumed that the project would never turn up
again. Rather unexpectedly, on May 19 2017, Y leaked the cover art for the album, and
released the entire album for free on Soundcloud, saying that it wasn’t for new fans, and
was 2009 shit he was tired of having on his hard drive. Album art follows.

In the 1970s, noted futurist Ray Kurzweil was heavily involved in the development of
optical character recognition systems, working closely with the National Federation of
the Blind. In 1976, Kurzweil and NFB together unveiled the “Kurzweil Reading Machine”,
the first computer system which could read text aloud without any major issues. A
famous musician X, impressed by the technology, reached out to Kurzweil, and thus
started a friendship, which would eventually grow into a business partnership.
One day, X complained to Kurzweil about the disparity in quality between traditional
instruments and electronic instruments. This inspired the futurist to venture into the field
of electronic music tech. Together, Kurzweil and X started Kurzweil Music Systems, which
pretty much transformed the world of electronic music tech.

Recently, this dude announced “the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent Ill-Advised Vanity Tour”,
opting for a “no frills” event, featuring a set comprised almost exclusively of original
songs. “I decided we should try something different, just for a change of pace,” he
explained on Facebook. “So next year we’re scaling way, way back. No costumes, no
props, no video screens, no computer servers. We’re just going to walk out on stage, sit
down on stools, and play a bunch of old songs. Oh, and we’re going to be performing
almost exclusively originals. The deep cuts and obscure tracks. The songs that were never
hits. The ones you barely remember.”
He likened the tour to “like we’re just hanging out, playing in your living room.” He
added, “After putting on ‘multimedia extravaganzas’ for 35 years, we just wanted to take
it down a few notches and have a little musical palate cleanser.”

● In addition to a love of melody, this band’s lead vocalist, Kevin Parker loves "fucked-up
explosive cosmic music" in the vein of The Flaming Lips. Combining these two things, My
Bloody Valentine have influenced Parker's music with their contrasting combination of
loud guitars and ethereal melodies. "If I was singing, I wouldn't be able to match the tone
of the instruments, which is really crunchy. The instruments are quite sonically brutal,
but the voice is really soft, and I think that kind of resonates with people. It's kind of like
My Bloody Valentine, where it's really brutal sounding, but kind of beautiful at the same
time”. The live drummer Jay Waston has described Parker's music as containing
"shoegazey guitar sound, but not played in a shoegazey manner”.
